IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICE POR STOP-MOTION FOR RBVOLVING SHAITS.

k'TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN :l
Be it known that I, ELI J. MANVILLE, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have. invented, made, 'and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Stop-Motions for .Revolving Shafts; and I de -herehy declare the following to be a full, clear, and `lenact description of the said invention, reference being'had'to the annexed drawing, making part olf this specification, wherein- Figure l is an elevation of the clutch endwise of the shaft.
Figure 2 is a section vertically through the shaft and clutch at the-line :c as, fig. 1.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the parts with the driving-pulley removed, and
Figure 4 is the pulley detached, showing the side that comes next the coupling-key.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.`
I n stopmotions for power-presses, looms, and many classes of machines, the clutch that connects the drivingpulley and shaft is disconnected at the proper time, but the momentum of tlieparts is such that they continue to move, often at the risk of injury -to the machine or therattendant, and frequentlythe parts stop at the wrong point.
The present invention is to insure the stopping of the parts that are mov'ed at a definito point, simulftaneoiusly with the disconnecting of the motor; and said invention consists 'in a latch-stop, tted to be slidden laterally and parallel with the shaft that is being revolved, in combination with a clutch-key passing crosswise of the shaft, and connecting the same with the pulley or other' motor, so that when the latch-stop is moved, its end, operates upon said'key, to'disconnect the same from the pulley; and this latch also becomes a stop, to prevent the shaft turning any furtherby the momentum, after the power is disconnected.
In the drawing, 'a is the shaft to be revolved, b is the pulley or wheel to which the motive-power is applied` -Upon the shaft a is a hub, c, in which is a key, d, sliding crosswise of the shaft, and having aehnank, e, around which is a spring, f, that tends to keep the head of the key towards the shaft a, but at the same time allow the key to be mov'ed by the latch g, acting between the projecting head, 2, of said key al and the hub c, as hereafter described.
The hub c has a. recess in its end, within which is the circular hub 3 of the pulley b, and in this hub 3 is,
`a. notch, 4, (see g. 4.)
When the key d is in the normal position, shown iniiigs. I and 2, the shaft a and pulley b are connected, and revolve together, but when the key d is drawn 'out Aby the action of the latch-stop, taking under the head 2, the shaft a is disconnected from the pulley or motor b. l
The red lines at d, fig. 1, show the position of the head of the key when drawn out by the latch g.
'The latch g also becomes the stop against which the key-head 2 comes into contact, and hence the shaft a,
fand parts connected thereto, cannot be turned beyond the proper point by the momentum.
The latch-stop is fitted to be slidden laterally, and parallel, or nearly so, with the axis ofthe shaft a, so as to be in a position to pass under the head, 2, of the key (Z, and stop the shaft a, or be drawn laterallyfrom under that head, 2, and allow the springf to draw the key into the notch 4, and connect the shaft a and motor b. The mechanism for giving this lateral movement to the latch-stop g might be varied. I have, however, represented a simple and eicient device, as follows:
The latch-stop g is mounted upon a hollow axis", it, passing into the frame or support Z, and m is 'a spring, tending to movethe llatch and its axis'laterally towards the key (il.
Throughthe hollow axis h is a bolt, t, upon the projecting end of which is a ea1n'-lever,'/t, conlined by ther screw-nut or head of the bolt. The cam e acts, when the lever n is drawn down, to pull the latch-stop g away from under the head lA2, and when the lever is relieved bythe action of a treaille, or any other connection, the spring m projects the latch-stop into position to withdraw the key ai.
Whnt I claim, and desre to ysecue by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The key d, slidngacross the shaft ,to be moved, to couple or uncouple the same, with the motor, substantally as set; forth, in combinatoulwith a, latch-stop, moved laterally, substantially asspecie., to operate upon s aid key nd stop the revolution of the shaft, es set forth. K i
2. The 1ateh-stop g, mounted upon a. hollow axis, in eombinaton' with tho cem-'lever n and key d, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto sot my signature; this 18th dey of May, 1868.
ELI JVMANVILLE.
