TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERNz' Be it knoivn that I, JAMES DRINKWATER, of Adams, in the county of Seneca, and in the State of Ohio,-
have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in :Horse Hay-Forks; ;and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being made to the accotnpnnying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the anneized drawings, forming part of this specification- Figure 1 is a. front vieii', and
Figure 2 is a side view of my invention.
A represents the outside frame of the hay-fork, to which are fastened two stationery rodsfB B. At the ends of these rods, hooks or teeth 0 C are hinged, which are worked by meitns of movable rods D I), passing throngh the cross-bar of the frame A, at the places m arked E E, to an inside frame, F. On the side of this inner frame F is a spring, I, which holds a latch, H, into the notch L, cut for it. The latch H is fastened to a movable handle, G, on' top of theoutside frame A.
The movable rods extended, form, with the stationary rods B and teeth 0, the tines of the fork, which is operated as follows: To enter the hay, throw the handle G down, which extends the rods D; then pull up, and the inside frnmc F, with the rods D, will be raised so that the hay catches on the teeth 0.
To drop the hay, pull the trigger K, which is fastened on the opposite side of frame F from the spring I. This will press the latch H out from the notch L,'thereby causing the whole inside frame, F, to fall, extending the teeth 0 hy'mea. ns of the rods D.
, Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure hylletters Patent, is+- The combination of the handle G, latch H, spring I, notch L, and trigger K, with the hay-fork, as he'tin described, for operating substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereuntoset my hen d,this 8th day of April, 1868.
JAMES DRINKWATER.
