Description

No. 793,023. PATENTED JUNE 20, 1905. H. A. PAQUETTE. HINGE.
In the course of the manufacture of this invention it is very desirable for the purpose of increasing the strength and durability of the pintle to have the intermediate portion of the pintle made-separately, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and then in the course of molding the portion into shape to insert this piece While the metal is still in its molten condition. In this manner the pintle is practically a single piece in its completed form.
In the hinge produced by my invention it is highly important that the pintle be of sectional formation that is, an intermediate portion independent of the other portion for the reason that by such a construction I am enabled to cast the pintle-leaf of the hinge with the upper and lower portions of the pintle integral therewith, while the central portion of the pintlethat is, the portion embraced by the knucklemay be made of other Wear-resisting material, such as steel or wrought-iron. The hinge is thereby materially reduced in cost of manufacture, while at the same time the parts subjected to wear are of extreme durability. It will be further noted that the shoulder 5, which joins the leaf and the pintle near the upper end of the latter, is gradually reduced in thickness from its junction with the leaf toward the pintle. This feature is also of material importance, for the reason that it permits a reduction in the width of the slot 9 of the knuckle, thereby providing for a larger bearing-surface between the knuckle and the pintle than would be possible were the shoulder 5 of the same thickness as the plate. Furthermore, the specific shape of the shoulder is practically triangular in horizontal section, with the apex joining the pintle, so that the slot 9 is of course of inverse shape, so that the apex of the slot formation is adjacent the bore of the knuckle, thus permitting of the greatest possible circumferential bearing of the knuckle upon the pintle without preventing the disengagement of the parts.
Having described and ascertained the nature of my invention, what .I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a hinge the combination, with the leaves, one of said leaves having permanently connected to its upper and lower portion a pintle, the upper portion of the hinge connecting the pintle formed with a grooved shoulder, the other of said leaves having a longitudinally-slotted sleeve arranged to pass the grooved portion of the abutting hingesection, as described.
2. In a hinge, a pintle-leaf having formed therewith the upper and lower sections of the pintle, a grooved shoulder joining the upper end of the pintle with the leaf, an independent central pintle-section secured to the portions formed with the leaf and a leaf having a longitudinally-slotted knuckle arranged to engage said central pintle-section.
3. In a hinge a pintle-leaf having formed therewith the upper and lower sections of the pintle, a grooved shoulder joining the upper end of the pintle with the leaf, an independent central pintle-section secured to the portions formed with the leaf, a leaf having a longitudinally-slotted knuckle arranged to engage the said pintle-section, a loose sleeve having a slot formed to correspond with the grooved shoulder and a cap having threaded HERMAN A.
