JACQUARD MECHANISM FOR LOOIVIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,983, dated J une 20, 1905.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that we,THoMAs H. HALTON and THOMAS 11. Moscow, citizens of the United States, and residents of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Jacquard Mechanism for Looms, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide for readily throwing out of operation the devices for lifting either or both of the griffframes of a doublelift jacquard machine either independently or in connection with mechanism whereby to interrupt the reciprocation of the card-cylinder. This object We attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side View of sufficient of a jacquard-machine to illustrate our invention as applied to the lifting devices for one of the griff-bars, and Fig. 2 is a View illustrating a modification of one of the features of the invention.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, 1 represents part of one of the side frames of the jacquard, and 2 and 3 parts of two griif-frames, each having a series of transverse griff-bars 4, the frame 2 having at each side a rod 5, which is guided in suitable lugs 6 on the side frame 1 and the frame 3 having at each side a rod 7, which ,is guided in lugs 8 on said side frame. The frame 2 is connected, by means of a link 9, to a lever 10, and the frame 3 is connected to a similar lever 11 by means of a toggle connection comprising two links 12 and 13, jointed together at 50, the link 12 being connected to the upper end of the rod 7 and the link 13 being connected to the lever 11. The-levers 10 and 11 are intended to be reciprocated from a double crank or other suitable operating member of the loom in the ordinary manner, so that the frames 2 and 3 will be lifted alternately. A third lever 14 is also vibrated from a rotating member of the loom and has a pin 15, which is adapted to engage the hooked or notched end of a bar 16, the latter being jointed to one of the supporting-rods 17 of the frame 18, in which the card-cylinder 19 is mounted, so as to be free to turn, such turning movement being effected by means of a pawl 20 hung to the side frame 1. The lever 14 also carries a pawl 21, which engages a star-wheel 22, (shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1,) secured to a shaft 23, which is mounted in a suitable bracket on the frame 1 and in the present instance carries a chain-wheel 2 1, to which is adapted a chain 25, engaging a chain-w heel 25, which is carried by a shaft 27, free to turn in a bearing on the lower portion of the frame 1, although any desired transmitting mechanism may be employed where- With to drive the shaft 27 from the shaft 23. The shaft 23 carries a cam 28, which is adapted to act at intervals upon the bar 16, so as to lift its notched end out of engagement with the pin 15 of the lever 14, and thereby permit vibration of said lever without corresponding reciprocation of the card-cylinder.
The shaft 27 is provided with a crank-arm 29, having an antifriction-roller 30, which acts upon a lug 31 on the link 13, so as to deflect the same, and thus bend the toggle formed by the links 12 and 13, these links being at other times kept in direct line with each other by means of a spring 32, secured to the link 13 and acting upon a projecting finger 33 on the link 12. When the links 12 and 13 are thus held in line with each other, they act in the same manner as a single link, and the griff-frame 3 is lifted on each vibration of the lever 11; but when the toggle is bent by the action of the crank-arm 29 vibration of the lever 11 simply causes a further bending of the toggle withoutlift of the frame 3. Whenever, therefore, in a series of operations constituting one cycle of movement of the jacquard-machine it is desired to lift all of the hooks controlled by the grid-frame 2, the cardcylinder 19 is held in the retracted position, as shown in the d rawings, and whenever it is desired to permit all of the hooks controlled by the grilf-frame 3 to remain down the toggle connection between said frame and the lever 11 is bent so that the frame will not be lifted. The lifting of the griff-frame 2 can of course be controlled in the same way, if desired. In
order to support the weight of the gritf-frame 3 when the toggle connection between the same and the lever 11 is bent, a coiled spring 3 1 is interposed between the lower lug 8 on each frame 1 and a lug 35 on the frame 3, this spring-support also permitting slight depression of the grid-frame 3 when the connection between the same and the lever 11 is shortened by the preliminary bending of the toggle connection under the action of the crank-arm 29.
While we prefer to use the toggle-link connection between the gri'if-frame and its operating-lever our invention may be embodied in a machine in which this construction is not adopted. For instance, in Fig. 2 we have illustrated a construction embodying the use of but a single link 4:5, notched at its lower end for engagement with a pin 16 on the lever 11 and acted upon by a spring 47, whereby it is normally held in engagement with said pin, the action of the crank-arm 29, however, deflecting the link so as to free its notched end from engagement with the pin, and thereby permit operation of the lever 11 without corresponding elevation of the griffframe 3. c
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of the griff-frame of a jacquard machine, with operating devices therefor having an element which can be moved to inoperative position, whereby the movement of the gritf-frame can be arrested without corresponding arrest of the movement of the operating devices, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the grifT-frame of a jacquard-machine, its operating-lever, and a connection between the two, with means whereby said connection may be rendered inoperative at intervals so as to permit movement of the lever without corresponding movement of the griff-frame, substantially as specified.
3. The combination of the grid-frame of a jacquard-machine, a lever for operating the same, a toggle connection between said griffframe and lever, and means for bending said toggle at intervals so as to permit movement of the lever without corresponding movement of the griff-frame, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of the griff-frame of a jacquard-machine, an operating-lever therefor, a connection between the two, a spring whereby said connection is normally retained in operative position, and means for rendering the connection inoperative at intervals so as to permit movement of the lever without corresponding movement of the gritf-frame, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of the griff-frame of a jacquard-machine, an operating-lever therefor, a toggle-link connection between said frame and lever, a spring carried by one of said links and acting upon a projection of the other link to maintain the links normally in line with each other, and means for deflecting the links at intervals so as to permit movement of the lever without corresponding movement of the griif-frame, substantially as specified.
6. The combination of the grifi-frame of a jacquard-machine, a spring-support therefor, an operating-lever for said frame, a connection between the frame and lever, and means whereby said connection is rendered inoperative at intervals whereby the lever may be moved without corresponding movement of the griff-frame, substantially as specified.
7. The combination of the griff-frame of a jacquard-machine, a spring-supporttherefor, an operating-lever for the frame, a toggle-link connection between said frame and lever, and means for deflecting said toggle-link connection at intervals so as to permit movement of the lever without corresponding movement of the griif-frame, substantially as specified.
8. The combination, in a jacquard-machine, of a gritf-frame, a card-cylinder, and operating mechanism for said frame and cylinder each having an element which can be rendered inoperative, whereby movement of the frame or cylinder can be arrested without arrest of the operating devices therefor, substantiallyas specified.
9. The combination, in a jacquard-machine, of a griff-frame, its operating-lever, a connection between said frame and lever, means for rendering said connection inoperative at intervals, a card-cylinder, an operating-lever therefor, a connection between said cylinder and lever, and means for rendering said connection inoperative at intervals, substantially as specified.
10. The combination in ajacquard-machine,
said card-cylinder and operating-lever, and
devices connected for joint operation, one of said devices rendering inoperative the connection between the griif-frame and its operating-lever and the other rendering inoperative the connection between the card-cylinder and its operating-lever, substantially as specified.
11. The combination, in a jacquard-machine, of a griif-frarne, a card-cylinder, operating mechanism for said parts, and means for rendering the griff-frame inoperative without affecting the operation of the card-cylinder, substantially as specified;
