TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES BENJAMIN WILLOUGHBY, of Uhriclisville, in the county of Tuscarawas, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Manufacturing Gas; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing, and making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a horizontal section, taken in the line :l: a: of iig. 2, and
Figure 2 is a vertical section, taken in the line y y of iig. 1.
The nature of `my invention consists in the peculiar manner of generating gas from naphtlha.
Its construction and operation are as follows:
In the drawing, A represents the pipe, which conveys the oil to the tank B inthe bottom of the machine.
AOn the topof the pipe A is a funnel, of, into which the oil is poured, and at the bottom of the funnel a is a stop-cock, b, which is kept closed except while the machine is being supplied with oil. The oil-pipe discharges into the tank B, near the top, as seen in fig. 2. l v
C represents an. air-pipe, (through which air is forced,) which extends down outside and under the machine, andthence upward into the oil-tank D.

At the inner ends of the pipe C are ball-valves, c c, which allow the an' to pass into the oil, but when there is 11o-pressure of air against the valves they remain closed, thus preventing any'leakagc of oil into the air-pipe or return of air. Above thevoil-tank B is a gas-chamber, D, and between the oil-tank and tbc gas-chamber are ball-valves, cl d, which allow rthe gas generated from the oil in the tank B to escape into the gas-chamber D.
In the top of the chamber D is an aperture, e, over which is placed a pipe, E, which extends to the side of the said chamber D, thence downward to the bottom of the water-tank F, where it branches oft` and extends around about half of the circumference of the tank B, and on the end of each branch-pipe is a ba1l-valve,f. A suicient quantity of water is placed in thc tank F to rise nearly to the top of 'the gas-chamber D, but does not come up as high asthe top of the pipe E. Consequently, should water get into the said pipe, it could not rise high enough to iiow into the chamber D. I
Inside ,of the water-tank is placed the gasometer G, which operates in the usual manner. Inside of the gasotneter is a pipe, H, the upper end of which extends up to the top of thc Water-tank, through which the gas" passes,"v to the burner.
Its operation is as follows: The oil is poured into the lfunnel a, and flows through thc pipe A to the oiltank B. When there is a sucient quantity of oil in the tank, the stop-cock 'b is closed. Air is then forced into the oil through the pipe C. The gas is then generated from the oil, and passes through the valves d oZ into the chamber D, thence through the pipe E into the water in the tank F, by which means it iswashed and rises into the g-asometer G, and by the pressure of the gasometer is forced into the pipe II, which supplies the burner. The oil being entirely surrounded by Water, obviates all danger of explosion.
This apparatus also has the advantage of beingso constructed that no smell of the oil escapes, thus overcoming one of the great objections to gas-machines.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
p 1. The combination of the oil-'tank- B, gas-chamber D, pipes and valves d, all as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination ofthe gas-chamber D, gaspipc E, and valvesf, substantially as shown and described,
and for the purpose specified. p
3. The combination ofv the oil-chamber D, the air-supply pipe C, and valve c, substantially as .shown and described, and for the `purpose set forth.
