'BENJAMIN MONROE, OF BRISTOL, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF,
WILLIAM E. OHADWIOK, AND NATHAN N. COLE, O-F SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 79,245, dated June 23, 1868,
IMPROVED GAR-COUPLING.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, BENJAMIN MONROE, of Bristol, in the county of Bristol, and State of Rhode Island, have invented'a new and useful Improvement in Oar-Couplings; and I' dc hereby declare the following to be full and correct description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side viewin perspective of my improved coupling Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical central section of the same; and
.Figure 3 is a top view of the link orshackle.
- The same letter marks the same part wherever it occurs.
The object of this invention is to provide an automatic coupling, which will obyiate .the necessity of coupling by hand, a practice so fruitful in accidents to railroad-employees.
The nature of the in vention cousists in the use, in combination with a slotted drawwhead, having a funnel shaped orifice, ofa draw-pin ,of peculiar construction, the twobeing so arranged as to receive and retain the,
head of a barbed link or: shackle, all as hereinafter more fullyset forth.
The fern} and construction of the various parts of the coupling'are clearly illustrated in' the d1'awings whereon H marks the drhw-heads, which, in general form, resemble those incommon use.v Their orifices are funnel-shaped, as shown in'fig. 2, and they are provided with slots for the reception of the draw-pins B. The form of the pin Bis shown infig. 2. It is raised and lowered by the aid of the ring The upper portion'o f the pin projects towards the orifice of the draw-head a greater distance than'the lower portion, forming an arm, the under side of which isrounded in front, and provided'with a shoulder, a, which,
when the pin is in its -1owest position, engages the barb of-thelink L.
The upper surface of the lower projection of the 'pin B is inclined downward, in a curvelcorresponding with that of. the funnel-shaped orifice of the draw-head,-so "that when the pin 13 is raised till the two surfaces coin cide, the arrow-head 7b of thelink L can be withdrawn from the head H.
. A pin, 10, limits the upward movementof B, and a shoulder, a, resting upon a" corresponding shoulder, b, in the head, limits its downward movement. The link or shackle L is provided with a head, It, the line ofju'nction forming a shoulder or barb, by which the attachment of the linkto the draw-head is effected.
. The operationris as follows: As the head of the link enters the draw-headfit slides up the inclined surfaceand presses up the pin 13, until'it has passed within the catch orshoulder s, when the pin B-falls, and engages njth the upper barb of the link, the lower barb resting against a shoulderof the draw head, as clearly shown in fig. 2. To release the link it is only'necessary to raise-tho pin B until the surface on which the lower barb of head -h'rests is level with the-interior incline of the draw-head, when the head 5, being released both above and below, can readily be withdrawn.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the draw-pin B, constructed as described','with the slotted draw-head H, having an inclined or funnel-shaped orifice, as described. 7 I
2. The combination ofthe head H, pin B, and link L, all constructedaud' operating as and for thmpurpose specified. I
The above specification of my said invention signed and witnessed at Bristol, this 25th day of February,
BENJAMIN MONROE, Witnesses:
CHARLES A. GREENE, E. M. Whanwnnn.
