WATER-FORCING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,429, dated June 13, 1905.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARK A. LIBBEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of South Berwick, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved l/Vater-Forcing Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to a hand-operated device for forcing water or other liquids, and is intended particularly for use as a fire-extinguishing apparatus or for irrigating gardens, lawns, and the like.
The invention involves certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which enable the apparatus to be oper: ated readily and quickly to throw a considerable stream of water in any direction desired and in the form of a solid jet or open spray, as may be desired.
Reference is had to the accompanying draw ings, illustrating as an example one embodiment of my invention, in which drawings like numerals'of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of the invention on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2, this View showing by broken lines the cover for the waterreservoir. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the invention. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is a section on the line 4: 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the nozzle, illustrating the spraying attachment. Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of the nozzle, illustrating the device for operating the spray attachment; and Fig. 7 is a sectional view illustrating a modification of the nozzle.
The apparatus is provided with a reservoir or bucket 10, which may be of any dimensions desired and which is provided with a horizontal cross-bar 11 in its upper portion, this bar serving not only as a handle to facilitate moving the bucket 10, but also as a support for the water-forcing device, as will be hereinafter fully set forth. The broken lines 12 in Fig. 1 indicate a cover which is adapted to be fitted to the upper end of the bucket or receptacle when the apparatus is not in use, this cover closing the upper end of the bucket, as well as the pumping and nozzle devices, the nozzle being movable downward to lie wholly in the cover, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
1 1 indicates a pump, which may be of any sort desired. The pump has an outwardlyprojecting tubular rod 15, serving not only to impart the operating movement to the pump, but to carry off the water forced from the same. Said rod 15 terminates in a circular head 16, in which is revolubl y fitted a section 1'7 of the handle, said section 17 being joined by binding-threads or the equivalent to the other section, 18, of the handle, so that the said sections of the handle may turn freely within the head 16, but will be held incapable of longitudinal movement. The section 17 of the handle is formed with a passage 17,,com municating with the circular head 16 of the rod 15 by means of openings 17 The section 18 of the handle has a passage 18, and formed on or attached to said section 18 is a nozzle 19, which projects laterally from the handle. By grasping the handle formed of the parts 17 and 18 and vertically reciprocating the same the pump 14 will be operated to throw a stream of water through the tubular rod 17 and head 16 into the passages 17 and 18 and thence outward through the nozzle. Since the handle, and consequently thenozzle, may be turned freely in the head 16 and since the rod 15 may be turned, with the plunger of pump, around the vertical or longitudinal axis thereof, it will be apparent that the nozzle may be pointed in any desired direction simultaneously with the operation of the pump, thus throwinga stream of water in any direction desired. During the operation of the pump the handle 11 may be conveniently grasped to steady the device. As here shown, the nozzle 19 is of the ordinary solid jet type, and I prefer to provide a sprayer 20, having a conical point capable of lying in front of the nozzle to spread the spray of water passing therefrom. Said sprayer 20 is attached to a thin metallic plate 21, which supports the sprayer and which in turn is connected to a rock-shaft 22, mounted suitably on the under side of the nozzle. By rocking this shaft the sprayer may be thrown in and out of active position, as indicated in Fig. 5.
The
rockshaft 22 extends inward along the nozzle to the inner end thereof and is connected to a thumb-piece 23, adapted to be actuated by the thumb of the hand operating the pump and having a swinging movement limited by a slot 23, receiving a stop-pin 24, attached to the rear end of the nozzle 19. By means of this device the person operating the pump through the handle thereof may at the same time keep the spraying device under control and by the action of the thumb-piece 23 throw the sprayer in and out of operative position whenever desired. This provides an effective means for quickly converting the stream from a jet to a spray, and vice versa, thus greatly increasing the usefulness of the device both as a fire-extinguisher or as an irrigating or watering apparatus. If desired, the nozzle 19 may be dispensed with and the handle-section 18 provided with a discharge-orifice 18", communicating with the passage 18*, the spraying device coacting with said discharge-orifice 18 in a manner which will be apparent from the drawings and previous description.
Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be resorted to at will without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie within the terms of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a pump, a turnable tubular operating member having a circular head communicating with the tubular member, a handle formed of two sections and fitting revolubly within said circular head, one of said sections having a reduced externallythreaded end extending through the circular head and provided with a central passage communicating by openings with the said head, the other section of the handle screwing on the reduced portion of said first section, and havling near its outer end a lateral dischargeout et.
2. The combination of a pump, a turnable tubular operating member having a circular head communicating with the tubular member, a handle formed of two sections and fitting revolubly within said circular head, one of the sections having a reduced portion extending through the head and provided with a passage communicating by openings with said head, the other section being secured on the first section and having a passage communicating with the passage of said first section, and a laterally-projecting nozzle connected with the said second section near its outer end and communicating with the passage therein.
3. The combination with a tubular handle, a nozzle projecting therefrom, a sprayer, a rock-shaft mounting the sprayer at the mouth of the nozzle, the said rock-shaft extending longitudinally alongside of the nozzle, a slotted finger-piece attached to the rock-shaft and projecting laterally therefrom past the rear end of the nozzle, and a stop-pin at the rear end of the nozzle and engaging the said slot in the finger-piece to limit the swinging movement of the latter.
4:. The combination of a tubular handle having a lateral discharge-outlet near one end, a sprayer having a conical point adapted to lie in front of the discharge-outlet, a thin metallic plate supporting thesprayer, a rock-shaft connected with the said plate, a laterally-extending finger-piece at the inner end of the rockshaft for adjusting the sprayer, the said fingerpiece extending at the side of the tubular handle opposite the outlet, and means for limiting the swinging movement of the said fingerpiece.
