PIPE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,377, dated June 13, 1905.
Application filed February 3, 1904:. Serial No. 191,901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OI-IN YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farmington, in the county of Strafiord and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Pipe- Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in joining adjacent ends of pipes firmly and tightly without skilled labor or the use of solder, screw-threads, &c. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the pipeconpling according to my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are detailed views of collars on an enlarged scale; and Figs. 4: and 5 are modifications of collars shown in Figs. 2 and 3, respectively.
This coupling is composed of a union A, collars B and G and modifications, and clamping-rings D D.
E E are ends of pipes to be connected.
The union A is a short piece of simple pipe with screw-threads cut on the outside of each end, and the center of outside may be octagonal for the wrench.
B is a spiral wedge-shaped collar consisting of a piece of metal with Width of both ends gradually converging to a point, wound in spiral form one and seven-eighths times its circumference. In B the piece of metal is narrower and wound from two and one-half to three and one-half times its circumference.
O is a wedge-shaped collar formed of a spirally-wound piece of metal. The end 5 of the collar is of suitable thickness to bear against the union A, and from the end b the spiral collar gradually decreases in thickness to the lower end, so as to produce the wedge shape desired.
In the form of collars shown by Fig. 3 there is a cut-out portion cat the thinner part, and, as shown in Fig. 5, such cut-out portion may also be formed at the thicker part of the collar, as at (Z, said cut-out portions being adapted to receive packing. The inside calibers or diameters of all are the samethroughout and the same as the caliber of the union A. The thicker ends 6 of these collars are about the same thickness as the ends of union A, and the collars gradually diminish to a line in thickness at the other end. These collars are full and fiat at their thicker end 5 and are to abut against the flat ends of the union A, with packing-ring g intervening. Their calibers can be considerably enlarged or diminished by their expanding or contracting upon themselves, and thereby adapting themselves to the size of the tubes E E, and still continually retain the full and flat face at their thicker enc s.
The clamping-rings D D are screw-threaded on the inside for aboutthree-fifths their length to fit and screw on over the screwthreaded ends of union A. From this threefifths point the caliber gradually diminishes to the other end f to the same caliber as that of union A, thus giving strength to this end and forming a converging caliber a little smaller, but to correspond with and fit the outside of the wedge-shaped collars and to be drawn on over them. The outside of this end is octagonal for the wrench.
To apply the coupling, first slip on a clamping-ring over the end of each pipe E E, next slip collar B on one and collar 0 on the other pipe with their thin ends to the clampingrings, then a packing-ring g on each tube. Now slip on union A over the end of one tube, bringing the tube ends in line together and adjust the coupling so that the tube ends meet at about the center of inside of union A. Now bring the packing rings and collars against ends of union A and screw each clamping-ring on over the union in opposite directions. This will press the thick and smooth ends of the collars firmly against the ends of the union A, the packing intervening, and will also squeeze the collars tightly around the tubes E E, so as to hold them very firmly and make a tight joint.
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a pipe-coupling of the class described, the combination of the end abutting pipes, a tubular sleeve or union fitted over the abutting ends of the pipes, clamping-rings fitted on the pipes at each end of said sleeve or union and having a tapering interior surface at one end, means for adjustably connecting the clamping-rings with the sleeve or union, and a collar formed as a spiral wedge fitted between the ends of the sleeve or union and the tapering interior surface of the clampingrings, whereby adjustment of the clampingrings upon the sleeve or union tightens the spiral wedges against the ends of the sleeve or union and about the pipes.
2. In a pipe-coupling of the class described, the combination of the end abutting pipes, a tubular sleeve or union litted over the abutting ends of the pipes, clamping-rings fitted on the pipes at each end of said sleeve or union and having a tapering interior surface at one end, a screw-thread connection between the sleeve or union and the clamping-rings, and a collar formed as a spiral wedge of metal fitted between the ends of the sleeve or union and tapering interior surface of the clampingrings, adjustment of the clamping-rings on the sleeve or union, forcing the spiral wedge against the ends of the sleeve or union and upon the pipes.
3. In a pipe-coupling of the class described, the combination of the end abutting pipes, a tubular sleeve or union fitted over the abutting ends of the pipes and having an exterior screw-thread, clamping-rings fitted on the pipes at each end of said sleeve or union and having interior screw-threads at one end and a tapering interior surface at the other end, a collar formed as a spiral wedge fitted between the ends of the sleeve or union and the tapering interior surface of the clampingrings, and a packing interposed between the ends of the sleeve or union and the ends of the spiral wedge collars.
