Be it known that I, IVILLARD Nonoo'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arnolds Park, in the county of Dickinson and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Movable Elevators, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved construction of movable elevator, the object being to provide a simple and efiicient device by means of which heavy boxes, trunks, and the like can be lifted from awagon to a car; or vice versa.

IV ith these objects in view the invention consists, essentially, in the employment of a main frame having upright-s at the opposite sides, said uprights carrying pulleys over which travel elevating-chains connected at their lower ends to a winding-shaft arranged upon the main frame, their upper ends being' connected to the movable skid.

The invention consists also in pivoting said skid whereby either endl can be raised or lowered; and the invention consists also in providing a locking mechanism for holding the skid in any desired position.

In the drawing forming a part of this specification I have shown a perspective view of a movable elevator constructed in accordance with my invention.

Referring to said drawing, A indicates a horizontal frame supported upon caster-rollers B and provided with a tongue C.

D indicates the parallel uprights connected to the side members of the frame A, braced by means of inclined braces D and connected at their upper ends by the cross-pieces D2.

E indicates the movable skid comprising the side members E', the end pieces E2, and the rollers E3, connected to the side pieces E and constituting the bottom of the skid. This skid is mounted upon ashaft F, passing through the blocks G, which slide up and down between the parallel uprights D, said blocks having the chains H connected thereto, which chains pass over the pulleys I, mounted upon the inner faces of the crosspieces D2, the lower ends of said chains being connected to the winding shaft or drum K, journaled in the main frame A and provided with a pinion L at one end, which is `adapted to be engaged by a large gear M,

operated by the crank-handle N.

O indicates a pawl for locking the gear at any desired point, and P is a brake-lever pivoted at P and adapted to bear upon the windingshaft for the purpose of retarding its m0- tion.

R indicates a hand-lever rigidly attached t0 the end of the shaft F, by means of which the skid can be tilted at anydesired angle, said lever being provided with a spring-catch R, adapted to engage the notched plate R2 for the purpose of locking the lever, and consequently the skid, at any desired point of adjustment.

In case it is desired to lift a heavy box, trunk, or other article, so that it can be placed in a Wagon or car, the article to be lifted is arranged upon the skid and then by turning the crank the skid is lifted to the proper height and the article can then be quickly and easily rolled therefrom. If it is necessary to shift the skid to an inclined position, the spring-catch R is disengaged from the notched plate and the hand-lever turned in the proper direction and the skid will then be shifted to the inclination desired and locked. In case it is desired to lower a heavy box, trunk, or other article the skid is first elevated to the proper height and the article arranged thereon, and then by releasing the pawl and placing' the foot upon the lever the skid can be permitted to descend by its own weight and the rate of descent can be regulated by increasing or decreasing the pressure upon the foot-lever, as required.

It will thus be seen that I provide a simple, durable, and efiicient construction of movable elevator capable of carrying out all of the objects hereinbefore referred to.

what I claim as new, and Letters Patent, is-
