WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,026, dated June 13, 1905. Application filed April 16, 1904. Serial No. 203,457.
0 (LIZ 1072/0722 it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'IANS THEODORE HAN- SEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improve ments in wheels, the purpose of which is to provide a durable tread for the wheel which will be comparatively cheap and at the same time take a good hold of any ordinary pavement, so that it may be adapted to the use of motor-vehicles which are propelled by the retation of the wheels.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a face View of the complete wheel, showing one form of my improved tire, a portion being broken away to disclose the construction; and Fig. 2 is a partial diametrical section and partial edge view of the wheel.
Referring to the drawings, the preferred embodiment of my invention therein shown consists of a wheel-center A, having a circumferential channel a, formed by annular flanges a In this channel are placed two annular rows of keystone-shaped blocks B, set edgewise to present their ends to the pavement and staggered so as to break joints. Each series is formed upon its outer lateral surface with a shoulder 19, and metal rings 6 are fitted to these shoulders and secured tightly' thereon, preferably by shrinking them upon the wheel in the manner of the ordinary wheel-tire. This will serve to draw the blocks tightly against the wheel-center and also, because of their keystone shape,
will crowd the blocks tightly together. The rings and blocks may be further secured together by means of bolts 7%, passed transversely through the wheel, if desired.
I realize the possibility of more or less variation in form and construction of my invention, and I therefore do not intend to limit myself to the specific details herein shown and described.
I claim as new Letters Patent 1. The combination with a wheel-ce11ter having a peripheral channel, of a row of blocks seated in said channel, shoulders upon the outer lateral faces of said blocks and bands shrunk on said shoulders, said bands lying entirely within the periphery of the wheel whereby the blocks project between the bands and form the entire tread of the wheel.
2-. In a device of the class described, the combination with a wheel-center, having a peripheral channel, of a row of blocks fitted in said channel, shoulders upon the outer lateral faces of said blocks, annular bands, L- shaped in cross-section, shrunk upon said shoulders and serving to crowd the blocks against the wheel-center and to protect the corners of the shoulders.
In witness whereof I have signed the above application for Letters Patent, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of ia consin, this 7th day of April, A. D. 1904.
HANS THEODORE HANSEN.
