SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,018, dated June 13, 1905.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ELIJAH A. GALLUP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hancock, in the county of Pottawattamie and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Fruit- Gatherer, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved construction of fruit-gatherer, the object being to provide a cheap, simple, and cfiicient device by means of which the fruit can be picked from the tree and caught in the gathering bag or receptacle without being damaged; and with this object in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the bag open. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view showing the bag closed. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the frame to which the bag is attached. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the upper end of the handle, showing the manner of securing the wire frame thereto. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the upper end of the handle, and Fig. 6 is a transverse section through the handle on the line 6 6 of Fig. at.

In the practical embodiment of my invention I employ a pole or handle A, octagonal in shape, to which is fixed an essentially rectangular-shaped frame B, which constitutes one side of the bag-holding frame, and pivotally connected to this rectangular-shaped frame B is an essentially rectangular-shaped member C, which constitutes the movable side or portion of the bag-holding frame. A bag or receptacle D is made of any suitable material and is connected at its upper end to the bag-holding frame, the bottom of said bag depending below and in advance of said frame. The bag D is held distended at its upper end by gravity, the bag being connected, as shown in Fig. 1, to the upper portions of the frames B and C and practically serves to limit the movement of the pivoted frame 0 in a direction away from the frame B.

In practice I prefer to make the frame B from a single piece of stout rod-iron or Wire and bend the same so as to provide the top horizontal member B", the eyes B at the ends of said top member, the parallel downwardlyextending side members B", the eyes B at the lower ends of said side members, the horizontal portions B constituting the bottom bar of the frame, the ends of the wire being turned downwardly, as shown at B, and adapted to fit into the grooves A, produced in the sides of the pole or handle A, a ferrule A or wrapping of wire serving to hold the said portions B to the pole, and the extreme ends B are turned inwardly, as shown in Fig. 4:, extending into the bore A The movable portion of the frame is also made from a single piece of rod -iron or wire and comprises the top member or bar 0', the eyes or loops C at the ends, the downwardly-extending parallel side members 0 which terminate in eyes or loops C", which engage the eyes or loops B and form the hinge connection between the fixed and movable portions of the bagholding frame. The ropes or cords E are connected to the loops or eyes 0 and pass through the loops or eyes B and are united, as shown at E, and from that point asingle piece of rope or cord E extends downwardly to a point within easy reach of the operator, passing through the eye A* and being secured to the eye A The bag D is connected to the bagholding frame by sewing the sides of the mouth to the top members B and G. The bag will open by gravity, owing to the Weight of the frame 0, and is closed by pulling upon the rope or cord E which draws the movable portion of the frame C up to the fixedframe B and closes the mouth of the bag, as most clearly shown in Fig. 2.

In operation the bag is elevated by means of the handle, so as to bring the fruit to be picked within the mouth of the bag, and then by closing the mouth of the bag the fruit is enveloped and by gently pulling upon the same will be disconnected from the stem and dropped into the bag or receptacle.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
