Beit knownthat we, JOHNA. Ennesimo and'RIonARn TA'iTERsnALL, of Beloit, Wisconsin, -have .invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full-and complete description thereof, reference being had to the aecompanyingdrawings and let'ters'oi` reference marked thereon, whichare a; part of this specification. In closing, the catches attached to the frame -of the 'gate 6 b pass under the latches n n, and in opening, the gates are raised above the said latches.,
The gateslmay be held open by a similar device.
The post N is'provided with suitable-stopsdop, to secure the proper operation of said latches.l v
` The gate is-operatedby 'a downward pull of the cords .7a 'z, causing theA paivl E, aflixed to the pulley D d, .to engage with the rigid ratchet attached to the shai'tC C, when, the pulling-force being'continued, the shaft is reyolvcd. The cranks'being moved forward and upiwardpor A,in the line of an arc, actuate the pitmen,which` thus Vraises the inward ends of theinclined planes, by the -same operation slidingthe gates upward, liftingl them out ef the latches 'n 'n and winding vup the weight G, thereby putting the gates lin position to open freely by their own gravity. On'releasing the cord Iz, the weight G rotates the pulley D ol to its normal position.
` The lgate is opened and ciosedby repeating the operation `from either approach..
What we claim as Aour invention, and desire tosecureby Letters'Patent, is=
1, Wc claim broadly the employment 'of the doublepullcy D ai, pawl ratchet e, weight G, and cords h l, when constructed, arranged,.and operated for the purpose of operating a gate orgates.` v .2. We claim broadly the circular inclined plane J, when constructed and arranged substantially as herein set forth and described, for: the purpose'speeifed; but wedo not claim as new the oscillating-plane J, for 'that has already been secured to us by Letters Patent of the United States.
3.-*We claim the latches 1t fn, and stopsp p, i'n combination with the inclined planes JJ, shaft C C, cranks c c, pulley D. d, cords t L, weight Gr, gate-standards B B, rods b b', and rollers I I, when the whole isfconstructed and arranged to operate substantially as hereindescribed.
