ro ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
. Be it known that I, WILLIAM ADAMSON, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in the Treatment of Raw Hide; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same. i Y
My invention consists in treating the clippings of raw hide for glue-stock, by subjecting the same to the action of dilute phosphoric acid, so as to enable me to utilize the residuum of bones and horn-piths treated with sulphuric or muriatic acid and water for glue-stock5 the said residuum being phosphoric acid, the use of which, in treating raw hide, possessesthe further advantage of rendering the glue produced less liable than ordinary glue to rotting andfermentation during unfavorable weather.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to practise my invention, I will now procecd-todscribe the mode of carrying the same into efi'ect.
i In order that ,my invention may be thoroughly understood, it should be explained in the outset that it can be most economically carried out in establishments where glue is manufactured from two different substances, namely, from bones or horn-piths, and from the clippings of raw hide. i
I In the manufacture of glue from bones and horn-piths, it has'be cn the practice to soak them in a mixture of muriatic acid and water, for the purpose of removing the phosphate and carbonate of lime forming that part of the bones which is insoluble in water. After the bones have been thus treated for glue-stock, the residuum consistsof dilute phosphoric acid, which has hitherto beenpermitted to run to waste as a liquid of no commercial value. A
In the manufacture of glue from raw hides and clippings, it has been usual to dry the same by exposure to the air, or to submit them to the action of sulphuric or muriatic acid and water, for the purpose of neutralizing the lime with which the raw hide'has been impregnated for the removal of the hair. The objection to' the drying process is that it must be conducted during the summer months,,and' then onlywhen the weatheris favorable,- as a comparatively slight change in the atmosphere will induce rotting and fermentation, and consequent damage. l I
Moreover, the conversionof the bones and horn-piths into glue-stock by this process is expensive, owing to the cost of the materials used. The process can be practised with economy only in producing glue of a very superior quality. I
The objection to the dilute sulphuric or muriatic acid treatment of the hide is that the glue produced therefrom after such treatment is liable to fermentation and rotting during changeable weather.
I have found, after repeated tests, that the dilute phosphoric acid, which remains after the treatment of the bones and pith, and which, has hitherto been discarded as useless, may be applied with the best rcsults'in place of the expensivesulphuric or muriatic acid and water in the-treatment of raw-hide clippings.
But great economy in themanufactureof glue is not the'ouly good result of this treatment of the hide, for the glue obtained by boiling the clippings after this treatment is of a more hardy character, or less easily afi'ected by changes of the atmosphere during the drying process than glue obtained from ordinary stock; in other words, the presence of phosphoric acid acts as a preservative of or protection of the glue from the bad effects of an unfavorable state of the atmosphere. g l
Although, on the score of economy, it is preferable to use the dilute phosphoric acid, which is the result of the above-described treatment of bones for glue-stock, the acid derived from other and more expensive sources may be used in the treatment of raw hide, with the best results as regards the production of a superior glue.
The manner of usingthe dilute phosphoric acid may be the same as that practis ed in treating the rawhide with dilute sulphuric or muriatic acid, and the strength of the mixture may be varied in accordance with the desired rapidity or delay in its action. I I
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The treatment of raw hide with the material and in the manner substantially as described for the purpose specified. i
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in-thcprescnce of two subscribing witnesses.
