'PATENT l OEEI'CE.
DAVID W. WHITAKER, OF OAKRIDGE, NORTH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THOMAS E. WHITAKER, OF OAKRIDGE, NORTH CAROLINA.
BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 791,388, dated May 30, 1905.
Application led April 6, 1904. Serial No. 201,847.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, DAVID W. WHI'IAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakridge, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bedsteads, of which the following` is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in beds, more especially to the Slat-supporting means. j
Said invention has for its object to prevent the lateral displacement or careening of the slats and to guide the movement thereof as when pressure is exerted thereon or removed therefrom, as in a person entering or leaving the bed, and to otherwise promote convenience and facility; and to these ends the invention consists of the combination of parts, including their construction and arrangement, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and particularly pointed out by the claim. In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure lis a broken-away longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 2 is a broken-away crosssection. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detached perspective view of a socket-casting or bracket for supporting each end of each Slat-supporting cross-piece.
In the carrying out of my invention I provide castings or brackets 1, two of which are applied or bolted to the inner side of each of the lateral rails 2 in the usual way for supporting each cross-piece 3 for carrying the bed-Slat 2a.. Each casting or bracket, in general outline of plate-like construction, has a lateral bottom edge iiange or ledge l projecting inward therefrom for the immediate 'support of one end of such cross-piece 3. Said bottom edge flange has projecting upward therefrom a lug or projection 1b, entering an aperture lc in said cross-piece to secure it against displacement. Said bracket or plate has also a slot 4 indenting it some distance and opening upward through its upper edge, and projecting inward therefrom are opposite vertical anges or guides 5, arranged along the lateral edges of said slot and extending the entire length thereof. Said slot receives a tenon 6, formed on one end of the bed-Slat 6, each end of each slat having a like tenon formed thereon engaging a corresponding slot in a bracket secured to the bed-rail at that side. By this arrangement, the slots in said brackets receiving the Slat-tenons and the lateral flanges forming' extended guiding-surfaces for said tenons, the slats will be prevented from careening and liability of slipping from said brackets as they are subjected to pressure, as in a person entering and leaving the bed. Also by such arrangement the Slat-supporting bars are readily attached to and detached from the bed-rails, as required in assembling and disassembling the parts, as will be appreciated.
The slats are suitably spring-cushioned, as at l l, upon their supporting-bars or otherwise to renderthe bed resilient or springy as for comfort.
Latitude is allowed as to details herein as circumstances suggest without departing from the spirit of my invention and the latter still be protected.
I claim` A Slat-supporting bracket adapted to be secured to a bed-rail, having a horizontal rightangle ledge at its` lower end .provided at its outer edge with an upstanding lug or pin, and a vertical slot in its upper part provided with an inwardly extended flange at each side thereof, combined with the lower bed-slat adapted at its end to rest upon said lateralV ledge, and having an opening through which the ledge lug or pin is adapted to pass, and 85 the upper or spring-supported slat having a tenon, its end adapted to enter said vertical slot, with the inwardly-extended flanges engaging the sides of the tenon and supporting the same.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID W. WHITAKER.
