SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 791,138, dated May 30, 1905. Application filed March 5, 1904. Renewed May 1, 1905. Serial No. 258,337.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE H. E. DAvIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have'invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Paper Printers and Suppliers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to certain improvements in paper printers and suppliers, and more particularly to suppliers for toilet-pa-v per or bundle-paper with printing-device attachments.

It consists also in certain improved adjusting and locking mechanism for the casing containing the printing and supply mechanism. The invention consists in the combination of elements and in certain parts of construction entailed in the combination of said elements to obtain the desired result.

A full understanding of the invention can best be given by a detailed description of a preferred construction embodying the various features of theinvention, and such a description will now be given in connection with the accompanying drawings, and I attain my object by the mechanism there illustrated, showing such preferred construction, and the features forming the invention will then be specifically pointed out in the claims.

Insaid drawings, Figurel represents a plan View of the casing and its contents after the case has been unlocked from the wall and has been let down to a horizontal position with its bottom side resting against the vertical side of the wall. Fig. 2is a side elevation of the apparatus, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of thearrows. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the casing and its contents as it rests, closed, against the wall, but with a portion of the front of the casing broken away to. show the inner mechanism.

the bottom side 7, and the front side 8 and opened at the back, may be cast all in one piece, as it will be stronger and lighter than to have the parts bolted together, as are a great many of the boxes now in use for supplying paper for toilet or other purposes.

The bottom side 7 is cut away, as at 7 from one side, 4, to the other side, 5, and has inserted in said cut-away portion a rod 60, rigidly attached, as at 60, to the two sides 4 and 5. Fastened to the wall by screws 11 is a plate or blade 10, which extends upward. and outward at 12, forming-a seat fororeceiving and holding the rod 60, and has the upward-extendingcurved lip 13, which presses near its upper end against the wall and tends to keep 7 the rod in position against the seat or socket portion 12. This case ordinarily rests against the wall in an upright position, as shown in Fig. 3 and in the sectional view, Fig. 2; but

it may be turned on its rod 60 and lowered to a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

Attached to the top side 6 by screws 5-8 is the U-shaped plate 42, having upward-extending parallel sides 42, each of which are provided with two elongated recesses 43 and 44 for receiving, respectively, the bolts 48 and 49, which bolts are attached to a plate 45, fastened to the wallw9 by screws 46. The bolt 47 is provided with a horizontal 5 slot, 49 for receiving the head 50 of the bolt 51, which bolt is slidably mounted upon the plate 56, which plate is provided with arms 57 57, which are attached to the sides 42'. This bolt 51 is operated by a pin or key 9 pushed in through the groove 54 of the front side 42 and through a corresponding groove in the arm 57 and against the seat 52 of the" head 50 to throw the bolt within the slot 49 or Worked against the seat 53 to push the bolt back to its normal position, withdrawing itshead 50 from out the slot 49 in the bolt 47. When the head 50 is within the bolt 47 the case is locked against the wall; but when this bolt is withdrawn the case can be lowered to a horizontal position and the rollers taken out or the roll of paper withdrawn and a new roll inserted.

Against the inner portion of the side 5 is a plate 21 and against the inner wall 4 is a similar plate 21, each plate being provided with slots or grooves 22 22, extending from near the center of the plate to the upper side of the rear of the plate, as shown in Fig. 2..of the drawings, and these plates are adapted to receive the shaft of a roll of paper 19, which roll of paper is withdrawn through an opening 8 in the front face 8 of the case. On the front of the case 8 and just below the opening 8 and at each side are parallel brackets 14 14, in which is pivoted a rod 15 extending across the front of the case, which rod carries arms '16 and 28 at each side, respectively, of the case. These arms are weighted at their lower'sides with weights 18 and 29, respectively, and also extend upward from said rod 15, as at 16 and 28, and carry at their upper ends a perforating or cutting device 17, extending across the front face 8 at a height just above that of the opening 8, so that when the paper is drawn across said cutting device the cutting device is swung forward until the sharp edge of the knife or knives is brought in contact with the paper and the paper is cut across its entire width or perforated sufficiently so that a slight downward pressure will separate the part forward of the perforating device. This cutting or perforating device by being weighted and allowed to swing allows a portion of the paper to remain without the case after each cutting.

On each inner side of the case are the parallel lower guide-bars 23, having on their upper outer sides wings 23 and adapted to receive bearing- blocks 62, 63, and 64, which bearing-blocks are provided with slots for receiving the shafts 35, 30, and 37 of the rollers 35, 40, and 37. These blocks 62, 63, and 64' are provided with separating- blocks 65, 66, and 67, as shown in Fig. 2, for keeping the rollers a sufficient distance apart. The guidebars 23 extend diagonally across the sides of the case from the back part downward to about the center of the inner front of the case and below the opening 8, so that the rollers placed within said bar 23 are all journaled above the roll of paper. Running parallel with said bar 23 is a guide or holding bar 61, having on its under'outer side wing 61, corresponding with wing 23 of 23, and these bars 61 are used to hold the bearing and separating blocks and the rollers in place. The shaft 35, which is the lower shaft within the guide-bars, carries a roller 35, having an outer coating of rubber or other material 36. The middle shaft 30 carries a roller 40,

having a covering portion 32, on which are rubber or metal type, as shown in Figs. 1. and 3, which may extend partly across this roller from end to end or may extend partly around said roller. Near the outer ends of this roller and extending around it are raised ribs 34 34, which are raised above the periphery of said roller about the same distance as said type, so as to regulate the amount of ink or other coloring material with which said type is furnished by the inking-pad 38 on the upper roller 37 and which also prevents the type from rubbing against the roller 35 and causing friction. The paper 19 is drawn upward from the roll 19 and between the rollers and and then through the mouth 8, and as it passes these rollers they revolve and the paper is printed upon.

The upper roller on the shaft 37 is provided with the inking-pad 38 for inking the type as the type-roller 40 is revolved around it, and this roller 37 may also be provided with raised portions 39 39, which extend around the periphery of said roller and are in contact with the raised portions 34 34 of the type-roller 32. A ratchet 41 is attached to one side of the roller and is engaged by a pawl 26, pivoted on a stud 27, attached to the inner portion of one of the sides for preventing the backward movement of the roller, and this pawl has a spring 25 acting against its upper surface to keep it in locking contact with the ratchet. The shaft 30 extends through the side 4 of the casing and is provided with a suitable handle 31 of any design for the turning of the shaft 30 and the operating of said rollers. Springs 68 68, attached by screws 69 69 or any other means, may be used to keep said rollers and bearing-blocks within the bars 23 and 61.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a paper printer and supplier, a casing, a roll of paper within the case, a slot in the front side of the case for withdrawing the free end of the paper, brackets attached to the front side of the case on each side of the slot, a rod pivoted to the brackets having at each end weighted arms carrying a perforatingknife for cutting the withdrawn paper, and the case having an elongated opening in its base, a rod extending in said opening across said case from side to side adapted to receive a spring-plate attached to a wall or support for holding said case upon the wall.

2. In a paper printer and supplier, a box, means for pivoting one of the sides to the wall whereby the box may bechanged from a horizontal to a vertical position so that the wall or support acts as the cover to the box, guidebars extending diagonally across the inner sides of the box from its open part to the front side, inking and printing rollers journaled in the guide-bars, separating-blocks for the rollers, a roll of paper journaled within the box and having its free end extending between two of the rollers, a slot in the front side of the box for withdrawing, the free end of the paper, brackets attached to the front side on each side of the slot, a rod pivoted to the brackets having at each end Weighted arms, a cutting or perforating knife extending across the slot between the arms, and a ratchet and pawl for preventing the backward movement of the printing device, substantially as shown and described.
