" IMPROVED SMUT-MAGHINE.
at: some more iciltilltflt sites {that no making out at it: smut,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY coroner;
Be it known that I, CARL MILLAR, of Sandoval, in the county of Marion, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Smut-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, which-will enable others skilled in the artto make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawingsforming'part of this specificatiom The nature of my invention relates to improvements inapparatus for smntting and cleaning grain, the object of which is to provide a machine that will do theworkin a more satisfactory manner than any now in use, without additional cost.
It consists in providing an a snitable framing a-vibrating screen, to which the grain is first fed to remove the straw and coarse material, from which the grain is delivered to a vertical conical smutter, made of an outer shell and interior drum of perforated sheet metal, and pro vided at its base with a fan, through which the grain is passed to a. vertical conically-shaped brushing zzpparatus, also provided with a fan at its base, through which the grain is also passed to another vibrating-screen, and from thence to'the hopper for grinding, will be more fully described on reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved machine, and
Figure 2 a central vertical section'of the same. 7 I
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts.
A represents the framing, and avibrating'screen, towhich the grain is delivered from the spout B, and which receives vibrating motion from the oscillating-shaft a, connecting-rods a and a, rock-shaft a, and t'appets on the shaft 11 of the brushing-apparatus. From the screen B, the grain passes to the sznutter C, which is composed of a conically-shapcd perforated sheet-metal casing, within which is provided a conical perforated sheetmetal core, arranged upon a vertical shaft, to which a high velocity is communicated by a belt on the pulley D. After passing through the above-described smutter C, the action of which on the grain is well understood, and which does not need further description, it passes into'a-fan-hlower, E, which separates the particles of smut and other foul matter from the grain in passing the smutter, by blowing it out through the spout F, and-conveys the grain to a spout communicatingfrom the spout to the brushing and scouring-'apparatnsG, also arranged in a vertical position, and composed of a hollow conical outer shell, provided on its interior surface with brushes, and an interior rotating comically-formed core, also provided on its outer surface with brushes, the lines of brushes on the shell and'c ore being arranged at difi'erent angles with one another, so that they pass each other in the manner of the edges of a pair of shears, whereby a steady and uniform action is maintained; From the brushing-apparatus G, the grain passes to another fan-blower, which separates the remaining refuse matter, by blowing it ofl thron'ghathe spout F, and which delivers the grain to another vibrating-screen K, shown in dotted lines in fig. 2, and which receives motion from the oscillating-shaft S, connecting-rod -6 oscillating-shaft b arm b, and tappets bf, on the-smuttershaft b. i From the screen K the grain is delivered through the spout L. i
The shafts b and a of the smutter and brushe'r have their lower hearings in the cross-beams M; which are suspended at oneend from the screw-rod N, whereby they may be lowered or raised, to adjust the cores of the smutter' and brusher, so that the spaces between them and their outer shells may he graduated to the various sizes of grain for which they may from time to time require to be used. Motion is communicated to the brusher from the shaft of the smutter by a belt, 0. The screen K may be provided with sieves of different degrees of meshes, for separatingthesmall'grains from the large if desired, and with different spouts, L and L, to convey the separated kinds away. i I
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The smut-machine'C, with its screen -]3 and blower E, in ccmbinatiousvrith the brnsher'jG, blowcr H, and screen K, when constructed and arranged in the manner and to operate substantially as described.
CARL MILLAR.
