DESK ATTACHMENT FOR PORTABLE TELEP HONES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,7QO, dated May 23, 1905.
Application filed December 26,1903. Serial No. 186,743-
To ail w/wm/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND OOUMPAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desk Attachments for Portable Telephones; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in desk or table attachments, and is especially applicable for use as a swinging bracket for adjustably supporting desk or portable telephones.
' To more fully understand the invention, reference is had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 represents in elevation a view of a portion of a desk with my attachment supported thereon; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the adjustable clamps for the telephone-support base; Fig. 3, a sectional detail view of the adjusting means for the end clamp, and Fig. 4 a view showing a modified application of the bracket to the side of a desk.
A designates the base top of the desk, and B the side stile thereof.
C is the bracket-support, preferably of the construction shown, having the flanged lower portion and the central upwardly-conicalshaped elongation provided with a longitudinal bore 0 extending therethrough and transverse aperture c The base portion of the support is hollowed out, as at C forthe purpose of lightness.
It is evident that the bracket, to be described, may be of one piece, or, as illustrated, composed of sectional arms D D, pivoted at E and provided on their inner end with a downwardly-projecting pivot-pin E, adapted to be received and freely rotate, respectively, as the case may be, in the longitudinal bore 0 or the transverse aperture 0 of the support U.
The outer end or arm D of the bracket is provided with a clamping means for adjustably holding the base of the telephone-support. This clamping means comprises the inner clamp member G, having the upwardlyextending ears g, preferably curved upwardly and circumferentially, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, to conform with the circular base on the ordinary desk-telephone support, and a substantially similar clamping-plate F with the ears f, adapted to be adjustably operated on the outer end of the arm D.
The clamp-plate G, as shown, has a channeled projection g for holding the same in position on the arm D and is also provided centrally with an aperture g for the reception of a screw or pin adapted to be screwed into one of a plurality of apertures d, extending longitudinally of the bracket-arm, thus afiording means for initially adjusting the position of the clamp-plate Gr thereon.
The clamp-plate F, similarly to the clampplate G, has a channeled projection f and is preferably riveted or otherwise affixed to a channeled slide formed, as illustrated, from a blank metallic plate bent to form the upwardly-extending sidewalls it, front wall 7t, and laterally extending ears H. Suitable means are also provided for operating the clamp-plate F, whereby the same may be fed inwardly or outwardly along the outer end of the bracket and held securely in its adjusted position. To this end the front wall of this channeled slide is provided with an aperture h to receive the headed end of an adjustment or feeding screw 1, adapted to operate within a longitudinal screw-threaded aperture d in the end of the arm D, .D designating an enlarged recess formedadjacent the outer end of the aperture (Z for the reception of an annular flange i, suitably secured to the screw I and forming with the head thereof an annular recess for forming a pivotal connection with the front plate it. By this construction the'outer clamp-plate F can be readily moved inwardly and outwardly along the arm for adjusting it in position with reference to the telephone-supportbase, and thereby clamping the same securely thereon.
In Fig. 4 I have illustrated the application of the bracket to the side of the desk instead of on the base, and it Will be obvious that by inserting the pin E in the transverse aperture 0 of the base member (3 the bracket D Will assume a horizontal position, as in the previous arrangement.
The bracket and its support are made of any suitable material, but preferably of metal 1. In an attachment for desks or the like, the
combination of a suitable support, a bracket carried thereby at its inner end and provided at its outer end With clamping means for a telephone or similar article, comprising a pair of clamps, one of said clamps being adjustable along said brackets outer end, and a feedscreW engaging said adjustable clamp and operating in a screw-threaded hole extending longitudinally of the outer end of said bracket.
2. In an attachment for desks or the like, the combination of a suitable support, a bracket carried thereby at its inner end, and provided at its outer end With clamping means for a telephone or similar article, comprising a pair of clamps, one of said clamps being adjustable along said brackets outer end and comprising a top plate having a channeled projection, a bottom plate bent to form a U- shaped channel having laterally extending ears secured to said top plate, said channeled members forming a casing slidably surrounding said bracket end, and means for operating and securing said adjustable clamping member.
8. In an attachment for desks or the like, the combination of a suitable support, a bracket carried thereby at its inner end and provided at its outer end with clamping means for a telephone or similar article, comprising a pair of clamps, one of said clamps being adjustable along said brackets outer end and comprising a top plate With clamping-ears, a bottom plate bent to form the upwardly-extending side and front Walls and transverse ears secured to said top plate, the two plates forming a casing slidably surrounding said bracket end, and means for operating and securing said adjustable clamping member, comprising a feed-screw engaging the front Wall of said loWer plate, extending through said inclosing casing and operating in a screw-threaded hole extending longitudinally of the outer end of said bracket.
In testimony whereof Iaflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
EDMUND OCUMPAUGH. Witnesses:
