GAS-HEATED FLAT-IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,731, dated May 23, 1905. Application filed October 13, 1902. Serial No. 127,048.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDRE LAFFITTE, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Marseilles, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Heated Flat- Irons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has relation to gas-heated flatirons, and among the objects in view is to provide a flat-iron of this character wherein the quantities of gas and air may be regulated by means of a single cock.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide means to prevent the steam arising from the goods being ironed from aifecting the gasflame.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a flat-iron constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a rear end elevation of the flat-iron. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view, partly in elevation, showing the air and gas supply pipes and contiguous parts. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are sectional views showing the cock turned to different positions, Fig. 4 showing the cock closed, Fig. 5 showing it turned to give a partial supply of air and gas, and Fig. 6 showing it turned to give a full supply.
In the drawings, A indicates the body of the flat-iron, to the standard or upright B of which is attached asocket-piece C, with which communicate the air-supply pipe d and the gas-supply pipe 0. The lower ends of the air and gas supply pipes communicate with a mixing-tubem', adapted to project the flame within the interior of the body of the flat-iron. g indicates the rear end of' the iron.
As heretofore constructed the regulation of the quantities of air and gas has been effected by two cocks, but in order to simplify the construction and the regulation of the supply of air and gas I provide a single cock 5, the plug of which is fitted and adapted for rotation within the socket-piece, said plug being provided with two bores or passages adapted to communicate,respectively,with the air and gas supply pipes and by the degree of rotation of the cock vary the quantities of air and gas supplied to the mixing-tube.
In Fig. 3 I plainly show the construction of the cook, the same comprising the sleeve or bushing a, in which is rotatably fitted the plug a, secured at one end by washer c' and nut is, the latter screwing upon a threaded projection a on the plug and the plug having at the oppositeend a portion Z, having a squared part m on which is mounted the arms c 6' presently described, said arms being secured by a nut a, screwing upon a threaded projection n on the plug. The plug is cut away and bored to provide the two passages 0 p, passage 0 being adapted to control the quantity of air fed to the mixing-tube and. the passage 19 being adapted to control the quantity of gas fed to the mixing-tube. By turning the plug the flow of air and gas may be entirely out off, as represented in Fig. I, or only a partial quantity supplied tothemixing-tube, as represented in Fig. 5, or a full quantity supplied, as represented in Fig. 6.
The cock is adapted to be operated by means of an operating key or handle, comprising three arms a e f. The arms 6 a are of equal length and longer than the arm f, and said arms a a are bent or curved inwardly toward the body of the flat-iron, whereby said arms will in the extreme movements of the cock abut against the air-supply pipe, thus limiting the movements of the key. The arm f is sufiiciently short to clear the air-supply pipe during the movements of the cock, and this arm f maybe used as the main operatinghandle for the cock.
For the purpose of preventing the gas-flam from being aflected by the steam arising from the goods being ironed I provide a shield lb, somewhat of a cup shape, as shown, secured to the body of the fiat-iron at a point below the exit end of the mixing-tube. This shield acts to prevent the steam from coming into contact with the flame issuing from the mix ing-tube, so that the latter may always burn uniformly and Without danger of being extinguished.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a gas-heated flat-iron, the combination with the body of the iron, of air and gas supply tubes, a mixing-tube with which said air and gas supply tubes communicate, a cock having two passages arranged to control the quantities of air and gas supplied to the mixing-tube, and an operating-handle for the cock comprising arms 0, e, said arms 6, 6 being of equal length and the arm f being shorter than the arms 6, a, said arms 6, e be- 5 ing curved and adapted to abut against the air-supply tube for the purpose specified.
