Be it known that I, FRANK F. BURTON, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extractors for Firearms; and I do hereby declare the following', when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the figures of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an improvement in firearms, with particular reference to extractors therefor, the object being to provide simple, durable, and elfective means for extracting and ejecting the spent shells.
With these ends in View my invention consists in certain details of` construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown I employ alongitudinally-movable-extractor 2, slightly bowed from end to end, so as to form a spring, and located in a long slot 3, formed in the center of the lower face of the integral bolt-receiving barrel extension 4 of the gun-barrel 5. Upon the upper face of its rear end the extractor is formed with an operating-lugo, entering a longitudinal slot 7, formed in the center of the lower face of the longitudinallymovable and rotary bolt 8. The length of this slot 7 will be determined by the length of the shell 9 and the extent to which the bolt moves back and forth. Near its forward end the extractor is formed with an extracting-hook 10, adapted to enter a notch l1, formed beneath the cartridge-receiving chamber 5*l in the barrel 5 to permit the said hook 10 to engage with the forward face of the iange or rim of the shell.
The extreme forward end of the extractor consists of a releasing-linger l2, entering when the gun is closed a notch 13 in the barrel 5 and when the gun is open a notch 14 therein, these notches being separated by a shoulder 15, which for convenience I shall call a releasing-shoulder, for the reason that when the gun is opened the finger I2 drops ofi1 the shoulder l5 from the notch 13 into the notch 14 and allows the forward end of the extractor to spring upward for the ejection of the spent shell, which at this time has been .fully extracted from the chamber 5l in the barrel 5. To the rear of the hook l0 the extractor is formed with a depressing-cam 16, which is engaged by an annular bevel 17, formed at the forward end of the bolt 8. v
It will be seen by reference to Fig. l that when the bolt is moved into its closed and locked position its bevel 17, engaging with the cam 16, depresses the forward end of the extractor, which is thus placed under spring tension, with its nose 10 located slightly below and slightly forward of the rim or flange of the cartridge 9. Now when the bolt is uulocked and started, in being drawn back it moves away from the forward end of the extractor and permits the same to risel sulficiently for the engagement of its hook with the iiange of the spent shell; but the extractor is not itself moved longitudinally. When, however, the bolt has been drawn back to the extent shown in Fig. 2, the forward end wall 7 of the slot 7 in the bolt engages with the forward edge of the operating-lug 6 of the extractor, causing the bolt to pick up, so to speak, the extractor, which from that time it pulls rearward, and so extracts the spent shell 9 from the chamber 5a.y During this rearward movement of the extractor rwith the bolt the releasing-linger 12 of the f extractor rides over the bottom of the notchr 13. By the time the said linger 12 has reached the releasing-shoulder 15 the spent shell yhas been fully extracted and is therefore free to be ,snapped or ejected from the gun under the impulse caused by the recovery of the springextractor when its finger 12 drops olf the yextractor and forces the same downward, so
that the forward end of its releasing-finger 12 is pushed below the shoulder 15, which must f be cleared by the said finger in order to permit the extractor to be shoved forward by the bolt into its'closed position.
I would have it understood that my irnproved extractor may be embodied in guns differing in construction from that herein shown and described. ,On that account it seems unnecessary to describe in detail the construction of the gun shown. It may be said, however, that the bolt is furnished with a firing-pin 18, having a firing-nose 19, with a firing-pin spring 20, a stop-pin 21, an operating button or iinger-piece 22, and with a scar-notch 23, which latter coacts with a sear 24C, hung on a pin 25 and operated by a trigger 26. rfhe bolt has a transversely-arranged operating-handle 27 and is formed with a cut 28 for the clearance of the operating-lug 6 of the extractor and with a cut 29, through which the sear reaches the scar-notch 23 in the firing-pin. rI`he bolt-receiving barrel extension 4 is formed with a chamber 30 for the recepto adapt them to receive and operate it. I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described herein; but hold myself at liberty to make such departures therefrom Y as fairly fall within` the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a longitudinally-movable extractor for bolt-guns, the said extractor being provided at its rear end with an operating-lug, and at its forward end'with an extracting-hook, 'a depressingf cam and a releasing-finger.
2. In a bolt-gun, the comblnation with a barrel formed with a cartridge-chamber and' cut away below the same to form a releasingshoulder, of a bolt, and `a longitudinally-movable extractor located below the bolt, adapted at its rear end to ybe engaged by the bolt by means of which it is'operatcd, and provided at its forward end with an extracting-hook, a
- depressing-cam which is engaged by the bolt,
and a releasing-finger which rides offk the said releasing-shoulder for the ejection of the' spent shell.
3. In a bolt-gun, the combination with a barrel formed with a cartridge-chamber and with a releasing-shoulder located below the same, of a bolt having its forward end beveled and its rear end grooved, and a longitudinally-movable extractor formed at its rear end with an operating-lug entering thc groove in the bolt, and at its forward end with adepressing-cam coacting with the bevel at the forward end of the bolt, with an extracting'- hook and with a releasing-finger which drops off the said releasing-shoulder in the barrel for the ejection of the spent shell.
