Be it known that I, LAWRENCE U. J oBEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mechanical Musical-Instrument Players, of which the following is a clear and full description.
This invention relates to that class of mu 1o sical-instrument players wherein the action thereof consists of a series of pneumatics combined with an exhaust-bellows and operated by a perforated note-sheet, called a musicsheet.
The object of my invention is to improve upon the construction of the bellows and wind-chest used in the class of instruments above referred to and to provide a system simple in construction and having greater accessibility for adjustment and repair.
My invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the lower half of a piano-player embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a section through the instrument at the line X X in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows one of the exhaust-bellows detached from the windchest.
In the description and drawings corresponding -numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The bellows l is controlled by the exhaustbellows 2, two in number, which are operated by the pedals 3. The exhaust-bellows 2 are not hinged to the bellows 1 in the ordinary way, but are entirely separated from the same and secured by screws to the under side of the wind-chest a in a horizontal position, which allows the use of exhaust-bellows of larger capacity and secures more direct control of musical expression.
The exhaust-bellows consists of two leaves, the upper one being a frame 5, adapted to be secured by screws 6 to the under side of the wind-chest 4. The screws 6 pass through the frame from inside the exhaust-bellows 2 and are made accessible from the outside through I the holes 7 in the lower leaf of the exhaustbellows, said holes being provided with screwplugs or other means for closing them in orv der to render them air-tight. By this method of construction the exhaust-bellows can be readily removed for adjustment or repair of the strap-valves.
The bellows 1 extends about two-thirds of the length of the instrument. It is attached to the under side of the back part of the windchest I and is connected with the same by the vent 10.
By my improved method of attaching the exhaust-bellows to the wind-chest they are rendered more accessible for repairs and adjustment.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a mechanical musical instrument player, the combination with a wind-chest, consisting of a box in which the top and bottom boards thereof are continuously glued to a rim, of detachable exhaust-bellows placed horizontally and attached to the under side of said wind-chest, and connected therewith by a series of valve-holes, said exhaust-bellows having a stationary leaf consisting of a frame adapted to be secured to said wind-chest by screws from within the bellows, the movable leaf of said bellows having a series of holes under said screws, whereby the same are rendered accessible, said holes being provided with means for closing and sealing them against the entrance of air, substantially as described.
2. In a mechanical musical instrument player, the combination with a wind-chest consisting of a box in which the top and bottom boards thereof are continuously glued to a rim, of detachable exhaust-bellows placed horizontally and attached to the under side of said wind-chest and connected therewith by a series of valve-holes, and an equalizing-bellows placed vertically to the rear of said exhaust-bellows, and secured to the under side of said wind-chest, and air-passages, connecting said equalizing-bellows with said windchest, substantially as described.
