SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 790,500, dated May 23, 1905.

and the invention consists in the construction of the jaws of the pliers, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, to which reference is made, and which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my new pliers. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the same, illustrating the method of applying the pliers to securing a lens in a frameless-eyeglass mounting. Fig. 3 shows in plan the construction of the jaws. Fig. 4 is a plan view illustrating the method of applying the pliers to the stud-posts of eyeglasses, and Fig. 5 shows a modification of the jaws.
In the drawings, 2 designates the upper and 3 the lower jaw of the pliers formed integral with the cross-pivoted handles 4 5 in the usual way. The jaws are constructed to span an eyeglass or spectacle lens 6, so as to grasp the earpleces 7 of a lens-mounting, and
by pressing on the handles cause the jaws to squeeze the earpieces down firmly against the surfaces of the lens and to enable the holding of the parts firmly in that position while the screw 8 is inserted and screwed down by means of a screw-driver. The inner surfaces of the jaws are recessed, as shown at 9 10, to form a clearance for the edge of the lens when the flat inner grasping-faces 12 13 of the jaws are closed upon the cheekpieces 7 of the mounting. The upper jaw 2 is formed with an aperture 14 to receive the head of the screw and to receive the blade of a screwdriver from the outside for turning the screw home while at the same time the parts are firmly held by .the pliers. The aperture 14 is in two diameters, so as to form a thin inwardly-projecting flange 15, the edges of which make contact with the earpiece of the mounting close to the screw and serving also as a guide for inserting the screw into the apertures of the mounting. The larger diameter-16 of the aperture enables the easy and proper manipulation of the blade of the screwdriver. An aperture 17 is formed in the lower jaw 3 of the pliers to correspond with the aperture in the upper jaw, so as not to interfere with the point of the screw, and this aperture is small, so that the face of the jaw will grasp the earpiece of the mounting close to the screw.
The jaws are formed at the ends with projections 18 18 and 19 19, which are adapted to straddle the stud-posts 20 of the lens-mountings, so'as to firmly hold the nose-spring 21 and the nose-guard 22 firmly on the stud-post while the stud-screw 23 is being inserted and screwed down, as illustrated in Fig. 4. The shoulders 24 24 and 25 25 in the jaws serve as guides or stops against the stud-posts, thus facilitating the proper application of the pliers to the stud-posts and to the parts to be secured therein. I prefer to slot the jaws as shown at 26 27, in order that the user may freely see the screw 8 while applying the pliers thereto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pair of pliers one of the jaws of which is formed with a grasping-face and with an aperture through said jaw in said graspingface said aperture being reduced in size adjacent to the surface of said grasping-face, substantially as described.
2. A pair of pliers one of the jaws of which is formed with a grasping-face and with an aperture through said jaw in said grasping face, said aperture being reduced in size adjacent to said grasping-face, combined with the opposite jaw formed with a complemental grasping-face having an aperture therein,substantially as described.
3. A pair of pliers whose jaws are formed at the ends with corresponding grasping-faces, corresponding apertures through the jaws in said grasping-faces and at right angles thereto and recesses at the inner surfaces of said jaws back of the said grasping-faces, substantially as and for the purposes described.
4. A pair of pliers'whose jaws are formed at the ends with corresponding grasping-faces, corresponding apertures through the jaws in said grasping-faces one of which apertures is reduced in size adjacent to the surface of the grasping-face said jaws being formed with recesses at the inner surfaces thereof back of said grasping-faces,substantially as described.
5. A pair of pliers whose grasping-faces are formed with apertures 14, 17 and with projections 18, 18 and 19, 19, extended beyond the apertures in the jaws, the jaws having recesses 9, 10 back of the grasping-faces substantially as described.
6. A pair of pliers whose upper jaw is formed with projections 18, aperture 11 and flange 15 combined with a lower jaw formed with projections 19, and aperture 17 substantially as described.
7. A pair of pliers whose upper jaw is formed with projections 18, stops 24, aperture 14, flange 15 and recess 9 combined with a lower jaw formed with the projections 19, aperture 17 and recess 10, substantially as described.
