Description

BENJAMIN P. PENDEXTER, OE MINOT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND) GEORGE W. HORNER, OF MEGHANIGS FALLS, MAINE. i
Letters .Patent No. 78,995, dated June 16, 1868.-
dlgs .Seattle tenants im tiges Eaters @anni mit mating part nt tige smut.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, BENJAMIN P. PnNDnXTEn, of Minot, in the county of Androscoggin, and State of 'Maine, have invented a new and improved Circular File and Saw-Set; andlIdo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereoi`,`which will enable others skilled in the art to make-and use the same, reference being had to the' accompanying,r drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved machine for ling and setting saws, and it consists in thelconstruc. tion and combination of' devices to be hereinafter described. In the drawings- Figure 1 is an end view of the machine to which my invention is applied.
Figure 2 is a front view of the same. Y
Figure 3 is a view of the end opposite ng. l.
i Figure 4 is a side elevation of Ithe circular iile, and
Figure 5 a central vertical section in the line :c a', iig. 4. i
B is the frame of the machine, bearing in its upper end the arbor C, connected te operate with the crankshaft Sl, by means ofV the pulleys D D and belt E, as shown. The crank-shaft Sl is provided with a ily-wheel, W, and is operated by a treadle, t, connected to thecrank by means ot' the rod t. This construction will be readily understood by reference to the drawings, and thcrefore'requires no special description.
Upon one end'of the shaft C, outside the frame B, is mounted an annular tile, a, shown in section, iig. 5. The file is rebated out upon one of its inner edges, to receive the iiange of an annular metallic washer fitting upon the hub A.' ofthe shaft, and secured thereto by means of metallic washers or disks.
The opposite end of the shaft revolves in bearings, whose upper metallic'portion is provided with an upwardlyprojecting anvil, e, to receivetheteeth iot' the saw, and extended laterally for the reception of the adjustingscrew c, by the raising or lowering of which the required set is given to the saw. This portion of the bearing, the anvil, and lateral extension, are all cast in one piece.
Pivoted at e3, upon the top of the frame B, is an arm, S, whose free end forms a hammer, and reaches forward between the guides el el of the anvil. A This arm is provided in rear o' the hammer with a start, which `is operated by a toe, a2, upon the shaft C, to raise the hammer for the necessary blows to be given the sawteeth. The force of the blows is increased bythe tension of aspring, S2, attached to the arm S', and any suitable part of the main frame.
The guides el serve as a gauge to give the same length of houd to eachs-aw-tooth. T T represent the table, supported and adjusted in the bracket]n upon tliesidc of the frame, under the circular file a, by means of a setscrew, n. This table is composed ot tw parts, the upper part T of which slides backward and forward upon the lower part T, and-is adjusted by means of' set-screws a3 in the latter, working through slots in the said upper part. This part also has a tlange on its inner edge, against which the saw to be filed is placed, to prevent the iile ct from cutting deeper at one time-than another.
The eye in the bracketfor the reception of the shank oi' the table, is bevellcd internally, to admit of the table being adjusted at any desired angle with relation to the circular i'ile. I
Constructed as above described, iny invention i'ornis a convenient machine for filing and settiinfjr saws, the advantages of which are,`that the iiling is done rapidly and accurately, and the saws quickly and perfectly-set.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim ltherein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The annular file a secured to the flanged wheel A, upon the arbor C, by means of the flanged washers H, as herein described for the purpose specicd. i
2. The anvil c, for the saw-set, formed upon and with thejournahbox of the arbor C, as herein shown and described.
3. In combination with the anvil c formed with the journal-box, the pivoted hammer-arm S, operated by i the toe ai, and spring S2, as herein described for the purpose specified.
