To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. PIOKERING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Fence-Machines; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section of my machine. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a face view of one of the wheels (0 and attached parts. Fig. A is detail view of part a.
This invention has relation to woven-wirefence machines, and has ,for its object the provision of improved means for clamping and releasing the wire strands or fence-wires being fed to or pulled out of the machine.
With this object in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter a designates a series of alined wheels carried by shaft band around which pass the fence-wires. These wheels a have each a laterally-offset beveled-rim extension a, forming a lateral clamping-abutment and acting to clamp the fence-wires in connection with the beveled lz'tterally-clamping heads of radial levers 0, having fulcrum connections with disks (0 at c and engaging at their inner ends with slots, of longitudinallyreciprocatory pushrodscl. The wheels (0 are shown as arranged in opposing sets of four, facing oppositely upon the same shaft, each wheel carrying four radialclamping-levers 0, actuated by four separate push-rods (Z, such rods having connections at their outer ends with radial intermediately pivoted operating-levers a, provided with fulcrum connections at c with the wheels f, mounted at opposite ends of the shaft 6.
Peripherally bolted to the wheels f at f are the rotatable star-shaped wheels g,the hubs g of which have annular grooves g engaged by pins 0 of the bifurcated end portions of the levers c. The wheels g and their hubs g are arranged to have a longitudinal reciprocatory movement upon bolts f, an eccentric projection g upon each hub g slipping into recessesf" of the wheels f upon rotation of star-shaped wheels 9, such engagement and longitudinal reciprocation being effected under the influence of the tension of springs d upon push-rods (Z. This longitudinal reciprocation of star wheels g, and consequent movement of levers (a and push-rods (Z, will cause the clamping-levers c, in connection with the rim extension of wheels a, to clamp the fencewires. This rotation of the star-wheels g is effected by engagement therewith of the trip devices it. Another rotation of the starwheels to cause the clam ping-levers 0 to move in the reverse direction and release the fencewires will be effected by trip devices it, separated from trip devices 71 by an arc of about ninety degrees.
The above description has reference to means for drawing the completed fence from the fence-weaving machine, to which the drawings relate. In means for feeding the fence-wires to such machine a similar arrangement of parts may be employed that is to say, a series of carrying-wheels having clamping devices provided with operating connections actuated in the same manner, although the arrangement ofparts may be different.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
I. In a fence-machine, the combination with the wire-carrying wheels having beveled offset rim-walls forming lateral clamping-abutments, of lever-arms carried by said wheels, and having laterally-beveled heads acting in connection with said walls to laterally clamp the fence-wires, and rotating devices for actuating said lever-arms at intervals to clamp and release the fence-wires, substantially as specified.
2. In a fence-machine, the combination with the wire-carrying wheels,of pivoted clampinglevers carried by said wheels, push-rods connected to said clamping-levers, and means ineluding tension-springs on the push-rods for reciprocating said push-rods at intervals, substantially as specified. v
3. In a fence-machine, the combination with the Wire-carrying Wheels, of pivoted clampinglevers carried by said Wheels, push-rods connected to said levers, an operating-Wheel, levers pivoted to said operating-Wheel and connected to said push-rod, and means for moving said levers at intervals to clasp and release the fence-wires, substantially as specified.
