Description

Patented April 25, 1905.
\VILLIAM H. MOHR, OF PLANTSVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
WASHER-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,217, dated April 25, 1905.
Application filed August 4, 1904. Serial No. 219,570.
To all whm'rt it may concern:
Be it known that LVVILLIAM H. Mount, 2. citizen of the United States, residing at Plantsville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vasher-Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the figures of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a side view of a washer-cutter constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view of the same, showing the parts in position preparatory to cutting; Fig. 3, a similar view showing the cutter forced through the material from which the washer is to be formed; Fig.
4:, a similar view of the second cutter pro vided with a stripper having a flat head; Fig. 5, a plan view of the disk with its center marked by the stripper; Fig. 6, a plan View of a complete washer with the center removed.
This invention relates to an improvement in washer-cutters, and particularly to those of the punch type that is, one comprising a circular cutter corresponding in diameter to the external diameter of the washer to be cut and by the term washer as hereinafter used I wish to be understood as including a ring-like washer or washer with its center removed or a disk.
In cutting washers with a punch-like cutter diificulty is experienced in removing the washer from the punch.
The object of this invention is to provide means for forcing a cut washer from the punch, and another object of the invention is to provide means for. marking the washer to indicate the center, which may be cut out with a second punch; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I employ a punch comprising a shank 2, provided with a chambered head 3, the edge 4 forming a cutting edge and corresponding in diameter to the external diameter of the washer to be cut. In the shank and opening into the head is a longitudinal recess 5, and in'one side of the shank is a slot 6, opening into the recess. Within the head is a stripper comprising a strippinghead 7 and spindle 8, the spindle extending into the recess 5. The head of this stripper is preferably chambered like the head of the cutter and provided with a marking edge 9. Extending through the slot 6 and into the spindle 8 is a screw or post 10.
In operation thepunch is placed upon the surface of a strip 11 of leather or other material from which the washer is to be formed and the shank 2 given a blow or placed under sufficient pressure to force the cutting edge 1 through the material and so as to cut disks therefrom. The stripper is so proportioned and arranged that when the cutter-head is forced through the material the marking edge 9 will produce a circular mark 13 upon the disk. The cutter-head is then withdrawn from the strip of material, leaving the disk 12 within the head, from which it may be readily ejected by a blow upon the screw or post 10, which forces the stripper downward and pushes the disk out of the chamber. After the disk is cut and marked, as indicated in Fig. 5, a second cutter is employed, the head and cutting edge of which correspond to the marking edge of the stripper previously employed. This cutter is then placed upon the disk, the mark or score 13 indicating the central position, and with this second cutter the center of the disk is removed. As shown in Fig. 4:, this second cutter is provided with a stripper substantially like the stripper above described, except that it has a solid head 14,
as it will be unnecessary to mark the central portion of the part cut away from the center of the disk. As before stated, these cutters vary in .size according to the size of the washers to be formed, and for cutting disk washers the cutters may be all provided with strippers like that shown in Fig. 4namely, strippers without cutting or marking edgesas it is only necessary to provide some means for forcing the disk out of'the cutter-head.
Having fully described. my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A washer-cutter comprising a shank, an
annular chambered head, and a cutting edge, said shank formed with a longitudinal recess opening into said head, and a slot in the side of the shank opening into said recess, a stripper comprising a spindle extending into said recess and a head located in said chamber, and means connected with said stripper and extending through said slot whereby the stripper may be moved independently of the cutter, substantially as described.
2. A washer-cutter comprising a shank and a chambered head having an annular cutting edge, said shank longitudinally recessed, a stripper having a spindle extending into said recess, and a head within said chamber, said head formed with an annular marking edge, substantially as described.
