This invention relates to the manufacture of metal washers by stamping from sheet metal in a cold state and has for its object to provide an improved method of and means for such manufacture. In the manufacture of washers in this manner it has already been proposed to pass strip material between dies, one of which is a compound die, the arrangement being such that at one operation a circular piece of metal is cut or sheared to the required shape from the strip' and is pierced with a central hole and auto- The object of the present invention is to provide means for bevelling one of the cut or sheared edges of such washers and in accordance with the present invention the dies are so adapted that the same movement which severs the blank and pierces the central hole therein, also bevels the cut or sheared edge at one side of the blank. For this purpose one of the dies is provided with a conical or like surface against which the edge of the severed blank is forced in such manner as to bevel same.

In the construction illustrated upon the accompanying drawings the dies are adapted for use in a machine such as described in my prior patent specification No. 1,446,399. In this machine the dies are arranged with their axes substantially horizontal so that the completed washers when ejected from the dies fall clear of both dies by gravity, through the vertical space between the dies, a positively actuated ejector being provided.

The compound die 1 is secured to the bed of the machine and is adapted to remain stationary. the other die 2 being movable, it being understood that the strip 5 of metal in its cold state is automatically fed between them. The compound die comprises the base member 1 having removably mounted therein a die member such as 3 provided with the central hole 4 the forward enlarged portion 6 of which forms the recess into which the washer is punched by the movable die member 2. This recess 6 is provided with the peripheral conical or bevelled surface 7. Disposed centrally within this hole 4 is the punch member 8 for forming the central hole in the washers and this punch member 8 is supported by passing through the ejector member 9 which slidably engages around it and also with the periphery of the central recess 4. The forward end of the ejector member 9 forms the base of the recess 6.
The central punch member 8 is screw threaded at its rear end 10 and is screwed into the boss 11 provided on the vertical diametral cross bar 12 mounted in recesses provided in the annular rearward projection 17 of the base member 1.
Vith this method of mounting the position of the forward end of the punch 8 is rendered adjustable.
The ejector member 9 is also screw threaded at its rear end and is screwed into the col let member 13 which is provided with three external bearing surfaces the forward one 14 of smallest diameter engaging with the die member 3 and the other two 15 and 16 with the base member 1. The ejecting movement of the ejector member is transmitted through the bar 18 provided with a forked end the two forks 19 being adapted to pass through the segmental passages left between the cross bar 12 and the annular portion 17 of the base member (see Figure 3) and engage with the rear face of the collet member 13.
The movable die 2 comprises a base portion 2 in which is mounted a punch member 20 adapted to engage with the recess 6 in theother die to sever the washers from the strip of metal. This punch member 20 is provided with a central hole 21 through which the central portions of the washers removed by the punch member 8 may be ejected.
The punch member 20 having severed the washer from the strip of metal forces it down against the base of the recess whereby the periphery of the washer is bevelled by contact with the bevelled peripheral surface 7. In Figure 1 the washer 23 is shown in this position, the movable die 2 having moved away again. The ejector member 9 is then moved forward through the medium of the forked bar and ejects the washer, this position being illustrated in Figure 2. The ejector is moved back again by the forward movement of the die 2, forcing the newly severed washer into the recess 6.
With this construction various sizes of dies 3, punches 8 and corresponding ejectors 9 may be fitted into the base member 1., all these parts being easily detachable in the ways described. Similarly various sizes of punches 20 may be mounted in the movable die member 2, being secured in position therein by the set screws 24. v
The washers formed may be of any suitable external shape they may be round, square, hexagonal or any other polygonal configuration in which case the tools will be shaped to correspond. These washers may also constitute blanks from which nuts may be formed, the pierced holes being tapped in a subsequent operation for this purpose.
What I claim then is z- 1. For the manufacture of washers by stamping from sheet metal in the cold state the combination of a pair of co-operating dies, one comprising av hollow punch, and the other comprising a hollow base member containing an outer die having a bevel sided recess at the end, a tubular ejector slidably mounted in said outer die, a collet slidably mounted in the base and in the outer die, said ejector screwing into said collet, and an inner punch slidably mounted in the ejector.
2. For the manufacture of washers by stamping from sheet metal in the cold state, the combination of a pair of co-operating dies, one comprising a hollow punch, and the other comprising a hollow base member containing an outer die having a bevel sided recess at the end, a tubular ejector slidably mounted in said outer die, an inner punch slidably mounted in the ejector, and a cross bar mounted in said base member, said inner punch screwing into said cross bar.
3. For the manufacture of washers by stamping from sheet metal in the cold. state,
the combination of a pair of co-operating dies, one comprising a hollow punch, and the other comprising a hollow base member containing an outer die having a bevel sided recess at the end, a tubular ejector slidably mounted in said outer die, a collet slidably mounted in the base and in the outer die, said ejector screwing into said collet, an inner punch slidably mounted in the ejector, and a cross bar mounted in said base member, said inner punch screwing into said cross bar.
4:. For the manufacture of washers by stan'iping from sheet. metal in the cold state. the combination of a pair of co-opeiating dies, one comprising a hollow punch, a movable head, and means for detachably securing said punch in said head, and the other comprising an outer die having a bevel sided recess at the end, a tubular ejector slidably mounted in said outer die, and an inner punch slidably mounted in the ejector.
5. For the manufacture of washers by stamping from sheet metal in the cold state, the combination of a pair of co-operating dies, one comprising a hollow punch, and the other comprising a hollow base member containing an outer die having a bevel sided recess at the end, a tubular ejector slidably mounted in said outer die, a collet slidably mounted in the base and in the outer die, said ejector screwing into said collet, a forked member for actuating said collet, and an inner punch slidably mounted in the ejector.
6. For the manufacture of washers by stamping from sheet metal in the cold state, the combination of a pair of co-operating dies, one comprising a hollow punch and the other comprising a hollow base member containing an outer die having a bevel sided recess at the end, a tubular ejector slidably mounted in said outer die, a collet slidably mounted in the base and in the outer die, said ejector screwing into said collet, an inner punch slidably mounted in tho ejector, a cross bar mounted in said base member, said inner punch screwing into said cross bar, and a forked member for actuating said collet.
