Description

THOMAS H. ,SAVERY, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
'Letters Patent No. 78,763, dated Jtme 9, 1868. l
IMPROVEMENT INIXPANDING-PULLBY.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HSAVERY, of Wilmington, in the, county of'New' Gastle, and State of Deia'- ware, have invented al new and vimproved Expanding-Pulley; and I do herebyl'declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming partot' this specification.
Figure 1 is a 'side view ,of myvimproved,expanding-pulley. I
Figure 2 is a section of the saine, through the'line :v a: of iig..
Figure 3 is a detail view of the scroll-disk and one rim, showing the manner in which the teeth of the arm engage with the spiral scrollof the disk. v
Similar letters of`reference indicate' corresponding parts. v v
The object of this invention is to increase o i" lessen the velocity of machinery driven by a belt and pulley, which 'is-raccomplished' by expanding or contracting the'rim ofthedriving-pulley, so as to increase or lessen the angular velocity of the saidrimwith agiven'velocity of the 'shaftbe'aringthe pulley.
This invention is designed more particularlyrv for regulating the speed'of coo'ch rorV calender1'o l1s..0f.
paper-mill machinery, the speed of whichjrolls: it is desirableto regulate by some convenient and expeditious Vmanner while the rolls are in motion.
This I accomplish `by means of an expanding-pulley, the sectional rims of whichV are thrown out or drawn' in radially by means of a` spiral or scroll slot in the facesof a disk, which latter revolves on the shaft of the pulley, and is engaged by corresponding teeth on the proximate face of the arms, forming part ofthe sectionalrims composing therim of the pulley,l l
The scroll-disk is connected, by a suitable train of toothedor friction-wheels, with a hand-wheel', having free motion on the shaft nfl-the pulley, and by holding this hand-wheel from revolving with. the pulley, the rims' are expanded or contracted according to' the direction in which the pulley is rotating. i
The train of gear-wheels, connecting the scroll-disk with the hand-wheel, may be variously modified without a'ecting lthe same general -result; but I will setforth a simple and effective manner by which the hand-wheel and scroll-disk may be connected to accomplish the perfectworking of the invention. l
The hand-wheel E is fitted with easy contact on-the shaft D of the pulley, and the hub of the hand-wheel is produced and formed into a pinion, a, or the said pinion may be made-'separately 'and ai'lixedto the hub.
The pinion a engages with a toothed wheel, b, the arbor, e, oflwhich bears a pinion, d, which, in turn, engages with the toothed periphery of the scrollfdisk A, which latter `revolves freely on the shaftD.- The arbor e of the wheel In, and pinion 01,'has a bearing in the lange-plate(i-` of th,` hub ofthe pulley, and this bearing is` continued through the sector-blocks, which are spaced apart around the face of the hub-Harige,- and'thus form the radial slots, in whichA the arms 4B of the sectional rims C work. These slots, however, may, in practice, be planed into a hubfilange, cast originally of suiicient'thiclrness for that'lpurpose.
The arms B fit with inisbed'contact within the said'slots, and'slide inV theA same as the rims C are-'expanded or contracted. This expansive and contractile movement is 'accomplished by means of teeth, formedfon or Vntiixed to the faces of1the arms, and which work with easy contact in the vspiral slot or scroll formed in the proximate face ofthe disk A, avs'shown at fin iig. 1, but better showuat the detail view of iig. 3.` v
A fillet or annular plate H-is'ailixed tothe hnbflange, and this serves to enclose-the arms in their respective slots. The pinion 0l `is 'locate-d in a circular recess, formed in the plate H, thc said recess opening inwardly toward the centre of the pulley, thereby permitting the engagement of the pinion with the disk:
This` recess is shown partially dotted .at fig. I. The disk A is within the plate H, and the pulley is not materially encumberod by the'geur-mechanism. p I artsof the hand-,wheel and'wheel b are broken away in fig. VIl, the better to show other` parts ofthe invention.
Having described thy-invention, YI clamasnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The expanding-rims, C, of a pulley, operated ,bv means of o. hand-wheel, E, and scroll-disk A, both working on the pulley-shaft D, and connected -by any suitable train of gear-wheels, substantially as shown and described.,
The above specification of my'v invention signed by'me, this 2d day of April, 1868.
