' With` these and other objects' inv view the invention consists in certain novel constructions` combinations, and arrangements of parts, :as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in theacco'mpanying drawings, 'out in the claims hereto appended.

In carrying out the present invention I have provided a pair of metallic keyway liners or irons 1, which are to be positioned within elongated apertures formed in the draft-timbers in combination with draft and buffmg gear means which is positioned between the metallic members 1, secured to the draft-timbers. i
The keyway liners ,or irons comprise in ytheir construction an approximately iiat body portion 2, which is provided ,with parallel iianges 3. extending longitudinally thereof. Said iianges 3 are constructed for the purpose of forming a guideway for cushioned followers, hereinafter described. The iianges 3 extend from the bodyportion 2 upon one side thereof, and integrally secured to and projecting from'the opposite side of said body portion 2 is a plurality of housings 4 4. The housings 4 4 are approximately rectangular in construction and are of sufiicient length to vextend through the apertured portion of the draft-timbers 5 for the purpose of forming a metallic reinforced surface, which is adapted to be engaged bythe cross keys or heads 6.6. The portions44 of mem-ber'l are positioned in elongated apertures, said portions 4 entirely filling the apertured portion of members 5,V thereby retaining members 1 in an assembled. position with drafttimbers5,`without employing bolts or any similar secu ring means. After the metallic reinforcing means for the elongated apertures which are formed in the draft-timbers has been positioned it will be necessary for theassembling of the other parts of the mechanism to position within the housings formed upon the forward portion of lmember 1 a cross key or head 6. upon which is mounted a draw-bar 11. The draw-bar is provided with a suitable recessed portion 12, which`is adapted to receive a boss 13. formed upon the front or shank-engaging surface of a follower 14.
The cushioned follower 14 comprises in its construction an approximately rectangular body portion 15, which is adapted to be movably positioned within the flanged portionof the keyway-liners 1. Upon diametrically opposite portions of the body portion 15 there are formed semicircular extensions 16, which are provided with a plurality of parallel lianged integral 'portions 17, which are adapted to extend from portion 16 to the outer engaging face` upon which is integrally secured the hollow boss 13. A plurality of hollow bosses 18 are formed upon the inner or springengaging surface of member 14. The bosses 18 are constructed for the purpose of providing suitable means for positively retaining one end of each of the springs 19 19 in an assembled position therewith. The body portion 15 of follower 14 is provided with a plurality of cells 20.
The rear or auxiliary follower 21 is constructed similarly to the fron t or primary follower` 14, except that upon its outer or engaging surface 22 there is not formed a boss similar to member 13. In this instance two of the parallel webs of reinforcing members 17 are extended at 23 to approximately a central point upon the surface 22, terminating in an oval slot or cut-out portion 24, into which one of the oval edges of member 6 is adapted 1t will be apparent that by means of the recessed web extensions 23 a positive lock is formed for the rear or auxiliary follower when itis in an assembled position with members 1 and rear cross-key 6, thereby preventing any oscillatory movement provided the guideways are worn sufliciently for per-- mitting of the followers to be loosely mounted therein. The springs 19 19 are positioned upon the bosses 18. formed upon the front or primary follower subsequent to the positioning of said follower between the engaging faces of the keyway-liners after the forward cross-key 6 has been positioned within the housings 4 4, formed upon the forward end of members 1 1 when they are in an operative assembled position with draft-timbers 5 5. Subsequent to the positioning of springs 19 19 upon the primary follower the auxiliary or rear follower 21 is positioned such as to permit of the bosses 18 18 to extend into the helical spring 19 19. and then it will be necessary to position the rear cross key or head 6 within the two housings 4 4, formed'upon the approximately parallel members 1 1, carried by the draft-timbers. After the cross-keys 6 6 have been positioned as described the coupling-links 25 are positioned upon the outer end of cross-keys 6 6 and secured thereon by any suitable means which is adapted to be positioned in the aperturedportion 26, formed near each end of the keys 6 6. v
Referring to Fig. 2, the same principle of construction is employed as has been heretofore described for the construction depicted in Figs. 1 and 3. The essential difference between thesc constructions is that instead of employing wooden draft-timbers 5 5, as in the described construction, I employ metallic draft-sills 5, which are provided with apertured portions 27, through` which are passed securing means for retaining the rsills 5 to the central stringers of the car floor or frame. The construction and arrangement of the cross-keys 6 6 lin k-cou pling members 25, and draw-bar 11 in the embodiment depicted in Fig. 2 are similar to that depicted in Fig. 1. The construction of the primary follower 14 and the auxiliary follower 21L (shown in Fig. 2) is similar to that shown in the other [igures of the drawings, except that in the embodiment Fig. 2 the followers 1,4EL and 21a are positioned transversely and not vertically, as is the ease of the preferred construction. The cushioning members 19* are arranged in parallel transverseposition upon followers 14 and 21.
Each of Figs'l and 2 of the drawings depicts a complete draft-bufhng mechanism for one end of each car, and it will be obvious that it will be necessary to position upon each car, near the ends thereof, a similarly-con- IOO structed mechanism when it is desired to couple the car with other cars.
The modus operandi is as follows: After the coupler which is secured to draw-bar 11 has been connected with an engaging coupler l when outward pull or draft is made on member 11 motion is thereby imparted to the front cross key or equalizing pin 6, and subsequently movement is imparted to approximately parallel coupling-links 25 and thence end portion of the housings 4 4 of members l, and after this positioning has been obtained the draft or drawing is exerted directly upon the reinforced surface of stringers 5 5 or sills 5. It will be obvious that by this construction when initial movement is imparte'd to draw-bar 11 pressure is exerted upon the cushioning means instead of directly upon a metallic rigid surface, as would be the case if ting of-the saine to be'mourited upon each* the cushioning means and its followers were obviated from the construction. It will be apparent from the foregoing description that 1 have provided a peculiar-constructed mechanism which produces a draftrigging to which is assembled a draw-bai' or at certain times a buffer-rigging for the drawbar, such mechanism being advantageous for the purpose of preventing unnecessary wear upon the assembling means for the draw-bar with the draft timbers 'or sills, whether the drawing or draft is exerted upon draw-bar 1l or an inward pressure, the bumping of an adjacent coupler mounted .upon another car, is the cause of movement of the mechanism.
While I have described in the foregoing description the preferred embodiments of the .present invention and have depicted the same.

and changes may be made in constructing mechanisms according thereto, and l reserve the right to make such alterations, modifications, and changes as shall' fairly fall within thescope and spirit of the claims.

In a device of the character described, the combination with apair of draft-timbers having a pair of elongated apertures of the same width of said timber, a metall-ic liner secured upon each of said'draft-timbers, said metallic liner comprising a body portion having a plurality of flanges extending from one side thereof, a plurality of housings extending from the opposite side of said liner of the same dimensions as the apertured portion of said draft-timbers, said housings adapted to be positioned within Said apertured portions, a stop formed upon the flanged portion of each of said liners and between said flanges, cushioning means interposed between said followers, transverse means positioned within said housings, connecting means secured to said transverse means, and cou pler-connecting means engaging one f said followers and mounted upon said transverse means.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination with a plurality of apertured draft-timbers, of metallic housings of the same width as said apertured portion positioned therein, movable cushioned means assembled with said housings, and a coupler assembled with said cushioned means.
8. .ln a device of the character described, the combination with timbers having transverse apertures, a metallic liner positioned upon each of said draft-timbers, said liners provided with integral housings mounted within said apertured portions thereof and extending the entire widtlrof the same, followers positioned between said liners, cushioning means interposed between said followers, connecting means assembled winth said followers and normally retaining a coupler in engagement therewith.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a plurality of keywayliners secured in parallel position, each of said lreyway-liners comprisingan approximately fiat body portion having a guideway formed upon one side thereof, a stop formed in said guideway, a plurality of housings formed upon the opposite side of said body portion comprising an approximately rectangular casing, a plurality of followers positionedwithin said guideways of the liners, cushioning means interposed between said followers, a pluralit)- of transverse members positioned within said housingsof the liners, connecting means for Said transverse liiembers, and a draw-bar mounted upon one of said transverse members normally in engagement with one of the followers.

l r l comprising a pair of parallel members provided with inwardly-extending flanges and outwardly-projecting housings, a plurality of followersmounted between said parallel members and within said flanged portions, cushioning means positioned between said follow-vv ers, a draw-bar connected with said followers,
and means for retaining said draw-bar and foliowers in an operative, assembled position'.
12. In combination, a plurality of `,metallic liners each comprising a body portion of substantially uniform thickness and having a continuous guideway formed in one side thereof from end to end, and a yreinforced housing projecting laterally from the opposite sides of the body portion, a stop formed in the guideway of said liners, and cushioning means secured between the liners and normally retaining a draw-bar in an assembled position therewith.

In a device of the character described, the combination with parallel guiding means, of a primary and auxiliary follower assembled with said guiding means, said primary follower comprising a celled body portion and integral extensions projecting in diametrically opposite positions from the sides of said body portion, a plurality of bosses formed upon one side of said primary follower, a boss formed upon the opposite side of said follower, said auxiliary follower comprising a celled body portion, said body portion having a plurality of extensions formed upon the sides thereof and extending therefrom in diametricall y opposite positions, integral bosses extending from one side of said auxiliary follower and a plurality of parallel extensions having recesses formed upon the opposite side of the same, adraw-bar assembled with and engaging the primary follower, and means connecting said drawbar with the outer surface of the auxiliary follower.
14. In a device of the character described, -the combination with parallel apertured drafttimbers, a metallic lining for each of the apertured portions of said draft-timbers and of the same width, cushioned means assembled with saiddraft-timbers, and coupling means secured to said cushioned means.
l5. In a device of the character described, the combination with apertu red draft-timbers, of housings of the saine dimensions as the apertured portions of the timbers positioned therein, movable means positioned within said housings, and a draw-bar or the like connected to said movable means.
