ATENT OFFICE.
BURGLAR AND FIRE ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming peut of Letters Patent No. 787,372, dated April 18, 1905.
Application filed September 30,1904. Serial N07 226,669.
Be it known that we, ll'tLLIAM Guaas and llnNnY Hausnr, citizens of thc United States, residing' at Mammoth, in the county of Kauawha and State of lVest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar and Fire Alarms, of which the following' is aspecilicatitm, re ference being' had therein to the, accompanying' drawings.
()ur invention relates to door and window stops and alarms, and morel particularly to that class wherein a stop of the character described is connected with au electrical alarm attachment, the object of the invention being' to provide a device of the characterdescribed that shall be simple and inexpensive in construction. durable, and effective iu operation and that can be readily adjusted to any door or window in such manner that the pressure thereof upon the stop will close the circuit and cause an alarm to be sounded.
A further object of our invention is to provide a device of the character described that can also be used as an etl'ectual alarm in case of a lire.
ln the drawings accomjainying' this specilication and made a part hereof we have illustrated a preferred embodiment of our invention. and while changes of detail will be sug'- g'ested to one skilled in the art such chaug'es or modilications come well within the scope and spirit of our invention as disclosed and claimed, and we do not, therefore, desire to be limited to the exact construction shown.
ln the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the corner of a room, illustrating our improved alarm in position. Fig'. Q isa horizontal section taken through the means for cormecting' the alarm with a door. Fig'. 3 is a similar view showing' the same applied to a window. Fig'. l is a detail section showing' the upper-wire support.
Like referencc-numerals designate corresponding' parts in all the l'ig'urcs of the drawing's.
l designates a stop pivotally mounted on a projecting' lug' or cleat 2, secured to the wall adjacent to the door. This stop is provided with a pin I5, having' a sharpened point '-l. The pin 3 works within a hole 5 in the Stop,
being' held in place by means of a small lug' plate t5, which projects over thc hole, leaving' a small space for the reception o f the point l. 'lo cach plate is secured a wire T, which connects with a battery b, the battery being' connected with a bell or buzzer E). \\'hen the door lt) is opened, it comes in contact with the pin 3, pushing' it forward. This movement brings the pointl into engagement with the plates (3 and closes the circuit by reason of the connection of the wires T with the battery and causes the alarm to be sounded b v the bell or buzzer. It will be observed that by reason of the stop 1 being' pivotally mounted on the lug' 2 it can be pulled out of the way of the door during' such times as it is not needed, so that it will not interfere with the free. opening' and closing` thereof.
ll designates a stop similar to stop l. This stop is secured to the wiinlow-frame adjacent to the sash and is provided with the same circuit-closing' arrangement as stop 1, in which 12 .lesig'nates the, pin, 13 the point, and Il the plates to which the insulated wires T are sccured, these wires being' connected with the battery S. A projecting' lug' or arm 15 is pivotally mounted on the wimlow-sash, so that when same is not in position for (,)peration it can be pulled to one side., permitting' free operation of the wimlow-sash. 'hen an attempt is made to raisel the sash, this lug', beingin operative position, is brought into coutact with the bottom of the pin 12, pushing' the same upward, bringing' the point l?, into engagement with the plates 1l, thus closing' the circuit and causing' the alarm to be sounded by means of the bell or buzzer 9.
lt designates hooks depending' from the walls of the room in which our device is used. A thread or cord 1T is stretched across the hooks and acts as a support for the upper wire. lVhen a lire occurs, the thread or cord is quickly burned away, causing' the upper wire to fall into the hook lt, thus closing' the circuit and sounding' the alarm by means of the bell or buzzer.
lt will be readily observed that the battery IOO and bell can be placed where desired in a room, either above, below, or opposite a door or window, or they can be placed in a house or building at a distance from the one in which the devices shown in Figs. 2 and 3 are placed. For illustration, the said devices illustrated in Figs. 2, 3, and 4 can be placed in a factory, store, or shop and the battery and bell in a residence in such position as to immediately sound an alarm in case of [ire or burglary. v
Having thus described our said invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A combined window-stop and alarm comprising a pivotally-mounted stop, a pin slidably mounted in a hole in the stop, a plate arranged on the stop on either side of the hole, av point on the pin arranged to engage with the plates and close the circuit, a battery, a bell, a plurality of wires connecting the bell, battery, and plates, so that when the point on the pin engages the plates, it closes the circuit and rings the bell, substantially as described.
2. Acombined window-stop and alarm comprising a pivotally-mounted stop, a pin slidably mounted in a hole in the stop, a lug on the pin arranged to slide within the slot in the stop and to hold the pin in place, aplate arranged on the stop on either side of the hole, and a point on the pin arranged to engage the plates and close a circuit, substantially as described.
- 3. A combined window-stop and alarm comprising a pivotally-mounted stop, a pin slidably mounted in a hole in the stop, a plate arranged on the stop on either side of the hole, and a point on the pin arranged to engage the plates and close a circuit, substantially as described.
4. An alarm comprising a pivotally-mounted stop arranged to engage with a door, a pin slidably mounted in the stop, a lug on the pin arranged to slide in a slot in the stop, and to hold the pin in place, and a plate arranged on either side of the pin and adapted to be engaged thereby, whereby the circuit is closed, substantially as described.
An alarm comprising a pivotally-mounted stop arranged to engage with a door, a pin slidably mounted in the stop, a lug on the pin arranged to slide in a slot in the stop, and to hold the pin in place, and a plate arranged on either side of the pin and adapted to be engaged thereby, whereby the circuit is closed, a battery, a bell, wire connections between the battery and bell and leading to the plates so that when the 4circuit is closed the bell is sounded, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we hereunto aiiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLI AM GILES. HENRY RAMSEY.
