HARRY MIDDLE ON, OF \VFSTYlLLlG, NEW JERSEY, ASSlt-iriOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHAR-LES ll. (ilFFORl), ()F llllLADELPl'llA, PENN- SYLVANIA.
HOOD FOR GRINDING AND POLISHING WHEELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,340, dated April 11, 1905.
Application filed December 14,1903. Serial No. 185,133.
l l l Be it known that l, HARRY N.Mii)i' i.t1'roN, a citizen ol' the l'nited States, and a resident ol' est ville, Gloucester county, New Jersey,
have invented certain improvements in lloods t'or Grinding and Polishing \Yheels, of which the t'ollowing is a spiwitication.
.\ly invention relates to certain iinprovewheel from its shal't.
hinged to the plate l) [or the same purpose.
ments in hoods for grinding and polishing wheels which are connected to exhaust-tans. The ob ect of my invention is to prevent the passage ol heavy particles from the hood to the exhaustd'an, which are ordinarily injui'ious to the tan. This object 1 attain by providing a collector in the hood which re- 1 is a perspective view of my improved hood, '1
illustrating one form of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is an end view.
is a hood having a curved portion (1 which [its over the grinding or polishing wheel. (Shown by dotted line 1', Fig. 1.) This curved portion connects with the body of the hood.
Below the grinding-wheel in the present instance is a chamber or receptacle B, having a removable cap B, which is connected to the body by a bayonet-joint 7); but other means of tastening the cap to the body portion may be resorted to without departing from my invention.
A is the outlet t'roin the hood, which is connected to a suction or exhaust t'an ol any The l l.) is a slide l), which can form an extension ot' the plate when desired. The object ol hinging the plate I) is to al- The side member (1 ot the body portion is attached to the body by a hook e or any other suitable l'astening.
()n the outer end of the curved portion ot the hood is a bracket to which is pivoted a shield F, which can be adjusted toward or from the surface ol the wheel to catch any particles that lly from the wheel, so that they will be sure to be conveyed into the hood. The shield is held in its adjusted position by a set-screwj".
Vhile .l have shown the hood in the particular l'orin illustrated in Fig. l and the suction-pipe arranged at an angle, it will be understood that the receptacle for the solid matter may be of any shape desired, and the suction-pipe can be arranged atany angle.
It will be seen that my invention can be readily applied to any grinding or polishing machine to catch the particles of solid matter passing from the wheel. The particles tail to the bottom of the receptacle and are there collected, the suction not being stillicient to remove the particles which enter the receptacle. Consequently they will accuinu late therein and can be removed at intervals by detaching the cap B.
I claim as my invention 1. A hood l or grinding and polishing wheels, having a curved portion partly surrounding the wheel, a receptacle at the lower end of the hood, a detachable cap tor the said receptacle, and an exhaust-pipe coupled to the hood at a point between the wheel and the receptacle, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a hood for grinding and polishing wheels, having a curved portion inclosiiig the wheel, a tapered body portion terminating in a receptacle, and an exhaust-pipe coupled to the body portion, with a detachable bottom for the receptacle, substantially as described.
3. The combination in an exhaust-hood for grinding and polishing Wheels, of a casing having a receptacle formed therein, one side of the casing above the receptacle being hinged, a plate pivoted to the front of the body portion, and an exhaust-pipe connected to the casing above the receptacle, substantially as described.
4. The combination in an exhaust-hood for grinding and polishing Wheels, of a body
