TO ALL WHOM 11" MAY CQNCERN:
Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM T. FRY, of New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new andnseful' Improvement in Breast-Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part ofthis specification, in which the drawing represents a. longitudinal central section of my invention Similar letters of reference indicate like parts..
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in breast-pumps, of that class which are provided with an elastic bulb for producing the necessary suction. I
The invention consists in providing a breast-pump of this class with an India-rubber breast-shield, whereby the nipple isprotected from pressure and the pumpftherehyrenderedcapahle of being used in aliens-es, without any inconvenience whatever, and more especially in those cases where the persdn using the pump has tender nipples. v
In the accompanying drawings, represents a glass milk-receptacle, which may be of oblate-spheroidal form, and provided centrally at each 'side with'a tubular projection, one, at, having a cylindricalmetal box, B, fitted upon it,'containing a valve, Z2, on which box an end of an elastic bulb, O, is fitted, the opposite end. of
said bulb having a valve-box, D, fitted upon it, containing a valve, 0.
E is a tnbe'within' the milk-receptacle, whichis curved or bent upward, and extends within a short distance of a hole or vent, d, in the receptacle, as shown clearly in the drawing. 7
On the tubular projection a of the milk-receptacle A, there is fitted an India-rubber shield, F, of such dimensions that it may cover loosely the nipple, and extend some distance all around it. I
This shield is designed to relieve the nipple of all pressure during the operation of the pump, and admits .of the latter being used without any inconvenience'in those cases wherea female has sore or tendernipples.
The ordinary breast-pump of the class herein described is. not provided with a shield, but has simply a "rubber flange on the projection a of -the milk-receptacle, which fitsclosely upon the nipple, and presses upon the same at every draw of the pump, oecas'ioning considerable pain. This diflicuity is fully obviated by'my improvement.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent A breast-pump, in combination with an India-rubber breast-shield, when the latter is applied directly to. the milk-receptacle of'the former, and all arranged substantially in the manner as and-for the purpose set forth.-
