SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 787,299, dated April 11, 1905.

Be it ltnown that I, CARL l). KOESER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of \Vinnebago and State of \Visconsin. have invented new and useful Improvements in Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rocking-chairs, and particularly to that class known as "spring-rockers.
The object of the invention is to simplify the construction of a chair relating to the above-specified class and to produce an efficient and durable device when all of the parts are in their normal assembled position.
Another object of the invention is to im' prove the construction of the springs employed in a chair of this character in addition to the construction of a peculiar locking means for the springs which is carried by the seat portion and base of the chair.
\Yith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of achairconstructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective viewof a sectionof a chairs rat, showing one end of a spring which is employed in the construction of a chair secured thereto. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the base of a chair and the binding-plates which are employed for the purpose of retaining a spring in a positive fixed assembled position therewith. view of one of the ends of the springs which form a part of the present invention. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the head-block employed in the present invention. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a key-plate. Figs. 7 and 8 are perspective views of another embodiment of the construction depicted in Figs. 4: and 6.
in constructing a chair in accordance with the present invention I employ a pair of base Fig. a is a perspective members 1, which are secured in an assembled position by any suitable means. A seat portion 2 is constructed of any preferred shape and design and is preferably provided with a back 3 and arms 4. For the purpose of securing the seat portion 2 and its superstructure in a movable assembled position with the base portion 5 of thechair I employ a plurality of springs 6, one of which is secured upon each of the base members 1 in the manner hereinafter specified. The springs 6 are constructed from a single piece of resilient metallic material, preferably a coil of wire. Said spring 6 comprises in its construction a corrugated or waved base portion 7, which is adapted to normally lie in a horizontal plane, and rising from said longitudinallycorrugated base portion 7 is a plurality of angular members 8 8, which are provided intermediate of their lengths with coils 9 9. The members 8 8 are provided near their outer ends 10 with a longitudinal groove 11. Said groove 11 is preferably formed upon the outer edge of members 8 S for the purpose of facilitating the fastening thereof in the seat of a chair, as will be hereinafter set forth. For the purpose of securing spring 6 to the base members 1 in a positive fixed position I preferably form upon each of said members 1 a longitudinal groove 12, within which is normally mounted the corrugated base portion 7 of a spring 6. Afterspring 6 has been positioned within the groove 12 in a member 1 a metallic bimling-plate l3 is placed upon member 1 in such a. position as to cause the corrugated portion 7 of spring 6 to impinge against the under portion thereof. A plurality of apertures 1% are formed in metallic binding-plate 13 in different positions. An auxiliary binding-plate 13- is also employed in the construction of each member 1 and the co(' perating members thereof for the purpose of artistically covering the primary binding- 3 plate 13 when said binding-plates are secured in an assembled position. To secure said plates in an assembled position, suitable securing means, as screws 15, are passed through apertures 146. formed in the auxiliary binding-plate 13 in a similar manner to apertures 1a, which are formed in plate 13, and subsc quently through said apertures 14, and are secured to the base member 1. The disassembled position of the binding plates is clearly depicted in Fig. 3, and the assembled position thereof is shown in Fig. 1. From the positioning of the apertures and the binding- plates 13 and 13 as shown in Fig. 3 it will be obvious that two of the screws 15 will engage member 1 upon one side of the groove 12 and that another screw will engage the opposite side of said groove.
When springs 6 are secured to members 1 as illustrated in Fig. 1, the base of the same will be prevented from having any lateral movement, owing to the fact that the side walls of the groove 12 and the binding-plate 13 form a casing within which portions 7 of the springs 6 are snugly incased.
For the purpose of securing each end of the springs 6 to the chair-seat 2 I have constructed a peculiar fastening mechanism which comprises a head-block 16, which is preferably semicylindrical in shape- Said head-block is provided with a recessed portion 17, which is adapted to receive the end 10 of members 8 of spring 6. A longitudinal opening 18 is formed upon block 16, upon the flat side 20 thereof. Said side 20 is adapted to lie in the same vertical plane in which the sides 21 of the chair seat 2 are formed. The groove 11, formed upon the end 10 of members 8, is adapted to be positioned within the headblock, as illustrated in Fig. 2, so as to cause said groove to lie in an exposed position through slot 18. A key-plate 22,which is provided with a key 23, is adapted to be positioned upon the sides 21 of the chair and secured thereto by means of screws 24, which are passed through apertured portions 25 and into the seat. The key 23 engages slot 11 of ends 10 through the slot or cut-away portion 18, formed in the head-blocks 16. \Vhen the key'plate is positioned upon the chair-seat, as depicted in Figs. 1 and 2, the ends of springs 6 will be positively secured in an assembled position with said seat by means of the keyplate clamping and locking the ends of the springs within the head-blocks 16.
In Fig. 7 the ends 10 of the members 8 are provided with grooves or key-seats 11 which are corrugated throughout their length. Similarly-constructed keys 23 are formed upon relates that certain alterations, modifications, and changes may be made Without departing from the scope and spirit of this invention, and for this reason I reserve the right to make such alterations, modifications, and changes.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, the combination, with a base having a plurality of longitudinal grooves, of a spring removably mounted within each of said grooves, comprising a corrugated base having a plurality of angular coiled extensions projecting therefrom,and aseat removably mounted upon said springs.
2. Inadevice of the character described, the combination with a base, comprising a plurality of members, said members having grooves formed therein, of a spring removably mounted within each of said grooves, comprising an angular base portion having a plurality of angular extensions, each extension provided with a key-seat formed near its outer end, a seat provided with key-sockets, and means for positively securing said key-seats within said keysockets.
8. A device of the character described, comprising a base having a plurality of grooves formed therein, a spring mounted within each groove comprising an angular base portion having a plurality of coiled extensions terminating in grooved ends, a seat assembled with said springs, and clamping means for retaining the grooved ends of the springs in a locked position with the seat portion.
4. In adevice of the character described, the combination, of a base having a plurality of approximately longitudinal grooves, a spring provided with a corrugated base mounted within each of said grooves, bindingplates secured upon said base and engaging the corrugated portions of said spring, grooved, integral extensions secured to each of said springs, a seat provided with a plurality of recesses, said grooved extensions of said spring adapted to engage said recessed portions of the seat, and key plates mounted upon said seat and engaging the grooved portion of said extensions.
5. A device of the character described, comprising a base, a plurality of flexible members mounted upon said base, a plate secured to said base above a portion of each of said mem bers, each of said members comprisinga base and coiled crossed portions secured thereto, a seat provided with clamping means secured above said base, and said clamping means adapted to secure the crossed portions of the flexible members in an assembled position with the seat.
6. A device of the character described, comprising a base, a seat secured above said base, and a flexible member connecting the base and seat and formed in a single piece of material,

said member comprising a waved base portion and a pair of coiled, crossed extensions projecting from the ends of said base portion.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base and a seat, ot'aspring member interposed between the base and seat and having integral, crossed extensions provided with longitudinally-extending grooves, a seat engaged by the grooved portions of the extensions, and corrugated retaining de vices connected to the seat and engaging the grooved portions of the extensions.
8. A resilient seat-supporting device of the characterdescribed formed from-a single piece of material and comprising a waved base, oppositely inclined crossed extensions at the ends thereof, coils formed by the extensions, and end portions provided with longitudinal grooves projecting from the coils.
9. in a device of the characterdescribed, the combination with a base and a seat, of spring members interposed between the base and seat, each of said members comprising a horizontal body portion, oppositely-inclined crossed extensions at each end of said body portion, longitudinal grooves formed upon the extensions of each member, said seat provided with recesses, the grooved extensions of the members positioned within the recesses of the seat, key-plates provided with a corrugated portion positioned upon said seat, the corrugated portion of the keyplates engaging the grooved portion of the extensions for securing said extensions in a fixed position to the base.

11. A device of the character described, comprising a base, a seat assembled therewith, and flexible means connecting said base and seat Comprising a corrugated base, coiled crossed extensions secured integrally to the ends of said base and engaging said seat, and clamping means for securing said flexible means in a tixed position with said base and seat.
12. The combination with a base and a seat, of flexible members connecting said base and seat, each of said members comprising a corrugated body portion, integral, crossed extensions projecting t'rom the ends thereof, removable plates positioned upon the corrugated bod y portions and clamping the same to said base, head-blocks provided with longitudinal openings secured to said seat, the extensions of said members positioned within said head-blocks, and means carried by said seat and engaging said extensions through the openin s in said head-blocks for securing the extensions in an assembled position with said seat.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a base and a seat, of a flexible member connecting said base and seat, means for clamping said member to said base, said seat provided with sockets, head-blocks countersunk in said sockets, each of said headblocks comprising an approximately cylindrical body portion having a flat side portion, said side portion having an opening, said flexible member being positioned within the headblocks, and removable plates positioned upon said seat and engaging the flexible member through the openings of the head-blocks for locking the flexible member in an assembled position with the seat.

The combination with a base and seat, of flexible members connecting said seat and base, each of said members comprising an approximately flat body portion, removable, parallel members positioned upon said flat body portion and secured to said base, crossed, integral extensions projecting from the ends of said body portion, a coil formed upon each of said extensions intermediate their length, and clamping means for securing said extensions to the seat.
15. The combination with a base and a seat, of a flexible member connecting said base and seat, said flexible member provided with a longitudinal groove formed therein, said grooved portion having corrugated walls, the grooved portion of said member engaging said seat, a key member provided with a corrugated portion positioned upon said seat, said corrugated portion engaging the corrugated walls of the member for securing said member to said seat, and means for securing said member to said base.
