QUILTING-FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,277, dated April 11, 1905.
Application filed February 11, 1904- sellill N0. 193,127-
Be itknown that l, CALVIN CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eunola, in the county of (:eneva, State of Alabama,
and 21, between which latter they are attached to a cord 23. .Iulleys 2t and are arranged above the center of the quiltingframe in spaced relation, and at the side of the haveinventtal certain new and useful Improveroom there is a pulley 26. A cord 27 is conments in (,Quilting-Frames; and I do hereby nected to the cords 22 and 23 at a point bedeclare the follmving to be a full, clear, and tween the pulleys 2% and 25 and is then taken ,1 exact description of the invention, such as will laterally andover the pulley 26 and then downenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to quilting-frames, and more particularly to the means for hanging the frame during the quilting operation, the object of the invention being to provide hanging means which may be conveniently arranged in any room of a proper size in which the frame will be raised and lowered by manipulation of a single cord and in which, fur thermore, when the frame lowered into position for use each end of the frame will be positively held against downward movement withoutrequiring the manipulating-cord to be fastened and in which, furthermore, the frame may be tilted laterally when desired in the operation of quilting.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in both views, Figure l is a perspective view showing the framesuspended from the ceiling of the room. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the frame in raised position.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a quilting-frame comprising the side and end members 5 and 6, respectively, in which is secured a quilt T in the usual manner for quilting. Attached to the quilting-frame, at the corners thereof, are the four cords 10, It, 12, and 13, which-are passed upwardly and around the pulleys 1%, 15, 1t), and 17, which are secured to the ceiling of a room above the respective corners of the quilting-frame. The pulleys It and 15 form one end pair of corner-pulleys, while the pulleys 16 and 17 form a second pair of corner-pulleys.
Between the pulleys 14c and 15 are arranged pulleys 1H and 19, while between the pulleys l6 and IT are arranged pulleys 20 and 21. The cords in and 11 pass inwardly beyond the pulleys 1H and I9, between which latter they are attached to a cord 22, while the cords 12 and 1-3 are taken inwardly beyond the pulleys wardly at the side of the wall, where it is atf tached to a cleat 28.
\Vhen the frame is to be used, the cord 27 is disengaged from the cleat and sullicient slack is given to permit the quilting-frame to move downwardly until the cord between the pulleys II and I5 and the cord between the pulleys 1113 and IT are straight, when there will be no necessity for fastening the cord 27 to the cleat to prevent further downward movement of the quilting-frame. Furthermore, it will be noted that either side of the frame may be depressed, thereby raising the opposite side or tilting the frame to facilitate the quilting operation under certain conditions.
\Vhat is claimed is The combination with a quilting-frame, of a cord at each end of the frame having its ends attached to the corresponding corners of the frame, pulleys disposed vertically above the So corners at each end of the frame and through which the cord at the corresponding end of the frame is passed and between which it is adapted to be taut when the frame is in lowered position, a pair of pulleys disposed horizontally between each end pair of the lirstnamed pulleys and with which the correspond mg cord is engaged, a connecting-cord attached at each end to one of the first-named cords at a point midway between the correspending second-named pulleys, a pair of spaced pulleys with which said connectingcord is engaged, a manipulating-cord attached to the connecting-cord between the pulleys with which the latter is engaged, a pulley over which the manipulating-cord is passed in a downwardly direction and a cleat for engagement by the manipulating-cord.
In testimony whereof I atiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CALVIN CARTER.
