PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN BURKE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MUSIC-LEAF TURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,272, dated April 11, 1905.
Application filed January 4, 1905. Serial No. 239,595.
- complicated parts.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a top view of the holder for the leaves. Fig 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4
is a side view. Fig. 5 is a central vertical section. Fig. 6 is asectional view on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates the holder for the sheets of music. This consists of a standard or post, preferably made of wood and having therein longitudinal slots 7 extending through the post and One or more sheets of music, such as indicated at 8 in Fig. 1, may be inserted in and through the slots. The construction is particularly adapted for sheetmnsic having either two or four leaves, and each slot will hold two leaves or four pages. It is by the rotation of this post that the leaves are turned. Said post fits at its lower end into the head 9 of the sleeve 10, which fits over the projecting end of the spindle 11. A set-screw 12 holds the parts together and permits of their separation when desired.
13 indicates a stand or casing which holds the operating-spring and associated parts, and 14 is a removable cover on the casing, through which cover the upper end of the spindle 11 projects. The spindle is mounted to rotate in the casing and is fastened there to one end of a spring 15, the other end of which is attached to a fixed pin 16. The spring is wound by turning either the standard or the casing with respect to the other.
The escapement devices comprise a Wheel O 17, fixed to the spindle within the casing, and
a pin 18, which extends through a slot 19 in the cover of the casing. The wheel 17 is provided with holes 20 to receive the pin 18. One pair of these holes is elongated, as at 20, so as to occupy positions on a circumference of smaller radius. The pin 18 is carried at one end of a spring 21, which is pivoted at 22 to the top of the casing.
23 indicates an arm projecting laterally from the end of the spring which carries the pin and arranged to overhang the trip-lever 24, which is pivoted at 25 to the side of the casing.
The spring 21 may be shifted laterally, so as to bring the pin 18 in line with all the holes 20 or only in line with the inner ends of the holes 20. IV hen the music has only two leaves, the latter arrangement is used, as only two releases are needed. hen the music has four leaves, the pin is set for all four holes, as four releases are necessary. Each hole allows a quarterturn to the musicholder, and the pin 18 acts as a detent by springing into the next hole after each release.
In operation the sheets of music are inserted in the holder, as above described, and the holder turned to the right, with the pin 18 engaging in one of the holes 20 or 20. T 0 turn the page, the lever 24 is slightly depressed to lift the pin from the hole. This allows the spring to turn the spindle and holder and throw the sheet over. The pin 18 drops into the next hole 20 when it comes thereunder and stops the movement until the next release. IVhen four leaves are inserted, the pin is set to catch in every hole; but when two leaves are inserted the pin is shifted so as to miss the holes 20 and catch in the holes 20 only.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. .In a leaf-turner, in combination, a post having slots, means to turn said post, and escapement devices controlling said means.
2. In a leaf-turner, in combination, a slotted turning post, a spring connected thereto, to turn the same, and manually-operated escapement devices connected to said post and controlling the action thereof others, and a manually-operated detent arranged to engage in said holes and shiftahle to engage holes in said dill'erent lines, to re lease and stop the spindle accordingly.
In testimony whereof lhave signed my name to this specification in the presence of two suhscribing witnesses.
