Letters Patent No. 78,708, dated June 9, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.:
Bc it known that I, G. W. Nl Yos'r, of Corry, in the county of Erie, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Mowing-Maehine and Ido herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others 'skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which- I Figure 1 represents a plan or top view oflmy invention.
,Figure 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the same, the plane of section being indicated by the line :r x, Iig.

This invention relates to a new mowing-machine, which is constructed with a view to siniplicity, compactness, and cheapness. l
The invention consists, first, in the manner of arranging the frame of the machine. The sanne is composed 0f a horseshoe-shaped metal bar or plate, to thctwo ends of which the shoe at the inner end of the finger-har is secured. The main body of the frame is about'on a level with the driving-shaft of the machine, while its two ends are bent down to reach1to the shoe, and to be hinged to the finger-bar. The axis of the horse-shoe is at right angles to the pole/otl the machine, and parallel with the linger-bar. Across the two arnis of the horse-shoe bar is laid a straight bar, the same being secured to the higher part of the frame. The main shaft of the machine has its bearings in the said straight bar, and in the centre of the horse-shoe bar, and the driving-wheel is mounted on this shaft, onlyr one wheel being used. The drivcr's seat is secured to the frame on that -side of the pole which is opposite to that to which the nger-bar is secured, andthe weight of the driver thus balances that of the finger and cutting-bar. The driving-wheel is, by suitable gearing, connecte-l with the pitruan.that gives motion to the cutter-bar. I l
The invention consists, second, in 'a device for raising the finger-bar and its appendages over obstructions, said device being composed of a caster-wheel, hung in the end of a bar which is pivoted to the front part of the shoe. The wheel fits through a slot in the shoe, and rests upon the ground. The bar to which it is secured is connected with a lever, which is within easy reach of the driver, and thus, when the driver desires to raise the Cutters over obstructions of any kind, he depresses the end of this lever, thereby, the caster-wheel being the fulcrum, he raises the point at which Vthe bar carrying the caster-wheel is pivoted to the shoe, and consequently the whole shoe, and the inger-bar, and, as the shoe is secured to the lower part of the frame, he also raises the lower part of the frame, bringing the whole frame into an inclined position. As soon as the lever is again released, the weight ofthe driver and of the-wholeniachine tends to depress the machine, and to return it toits original position,
A represents the frame of my improved mowing-machine. The same consists lof two pieces, a and b. The piece a is a metal bar, shapedvsoinewhat like a horse-shoe, with the ends bent down, and the upper part at a lev'el, The piece is a .straight metal or other bar, laid across -tbc two arms of the horse-shoe, at the upper portion of the same, as shown. v
B is the main shaft of the machine, having its bearings in the bars a and as shown.
C is the main drivingwheel ofthe machine,` mounted on the shaft, as shown.
D is the pole, secured to the frame, so-as to lbe parallel with the bar b of the same.
To the lower ends of the bar t is secured a shoe, E, and to the rear end of the bar a is hinged the ngerbar F, of suitable construction, carrying a suitable cutterbar, Gr, as shown. e
By means of suitable gear-wheels, c c, or other equivalent devices, motion is imparted from the driving-shaft B to an axle, ai', to which the pitmau-'wheel e is secured, the rod ZL connecting the wheel e with the cutter-bar Gf,
L and imparting motion to the latter.
His the'drivers seat, secured uponi'avstand'ard orfstandar'ds, gfprjecting'froui therounded prt of the horse-shoe bar a, so as to be opposite to the finger-bar, asshoivn.4
I is a. bar, pivoted to thefront part of the shoe E; at 'or near the junction ofthe same with the front arm of a. The r-ear end ofthe bar I carries a. easter-wheel, J, which fits through a slot in the shoe E, and which rests upon the ground, as shown in g. 2. l The f ront end ofthe bar I is connected with a lever, f, which is within reach of the driver when the same is on the sweat H, as shown. I* Y By pulling the end ofthe leverf'towalrds the seat, the frontend of the bnr I will be raised, therebyvraising the shoe E, and the finger-bar audits appendages, the slot in the shoe E allowing it to be raised, whilethe wheel J remains on the groundeztnd supports the whole lower part of themachine. Thus the finger-bar can be easily raised over obstructions wherever desired.
Having thus described myinventionfwhut I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
-1. The 'frameA of a mowing-machine, when construetedof a. single bar,a, approximating in form yto a. horse-shoe, and o. transverse strengthening-bar, I), when theextremities of the bar a are bentdown for the attachment of the shoe E, and Vii'rigerfbsi, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In combination with the above,v I claim the main wheel C, when arranged betweenv the drivers sont and. the transverse bar b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. f A.
3. The wheel J, on the hinged bar I, in combination witli'the slotted shoe E, and witlrthe lever.f, all made and operating so that the finger-bar can be easily raised by means ofthe leverf, as set forth.
G. W. N.. Yosr.
