IMPROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.

Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 110,714, dated January 3, 1871.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that we, WALTER A. WOOD, WILLIAM ANsoN WOOD, and JOHN M. Rosn- BROOKS, of Hoosick Falls, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvesting-Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents, in perspective, a mowing-machine composed ot what we term a "mowing attachment, and completed byparts or portions that may be interchangeably used in a reaper and mower. Fig. 2 represents a Figs. 3 and 4represent details of the machine which will hereafter be more particularly referred to.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.

X represents the main frame of the mower attachment, to which the axles or journals, as well as the other appliances ofthe machine as a mower, are attached, as will be explained, as also will be explained the parts taken or borrowed from the reaper.

To the front un der portion of the main frame' there is attached a bar, fw, to which is hinged a shoe-piece, x, the rear end of said shoe-piece being pivoted in the axle or journal-piece yof the wheel B', so that it can rock or roll in the line of its length. This shoe-piece a: carries the iin ger-bar and cutting apparatus and their appliances, as also the shoe guide-wheel Y.

A segmental lever, Z, and chain z are furnished, by which the cutting apparatus may be raised up, and appliances for holdin git up are also furnished.

On the shoe-piece or plate there is a projection, l, against which the lower rounded end 2 of a lever, C', pivoted to the mainframe at 3, and operated by the driver in his seat, may be brought s0 as to throw or gag up the outer end of the nger-bar and cutting apparatus.

To aid in this raising operation, provided the operator is using his hands for something else, or to allow him to raise up or gag up the cutting apparatus with his foot, a bent footlever, D', is used, which is pivoted by a sleevehub, or otherwise, to the axle u, and its under end receives the end of the gag-lever 4, that is united to the shoe-piece a: at 5, so that by pressing upon the foot-lever D or pushing against it with the foot causes the lever 4 to raise up the outer end of the finger-bar and cutting apparatus.

To prevent the outer end of the finger-bar from dropping down too low, the bar or lever 4 is allowed to bring up against a portion of the main frame X, and there stop and hold said bar and prevent it from dropping any lower.

The driving-wheel B, the supporting-wheel B', the drivers seat O, and the pole W are not sold with this mower attachment when it is sold with afullreaping-machine, as the wheels, seat, and pole of the latter are transferred to the mower attachment, thus making that attachment a complete mower, and at a saving of one-fourth or one-third of the cost of a complete mower. These particular parts-viz., the wheels, the seat, and the pole-are not liable to wear out, and will easily outlast the active driving parts of the two machines.
