Beit known that I, AMBROSE TOWER, of the city,.county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Protea'n Pocket-Pen and Pencil, of which the following is a full,elear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- A Figure 1 is an elevation (with pencil broken olf) of a pen-barrel holder, with slot therein, and pen-cross slide.

Figure-1l is a view of the metallic pen-receiver and cross-slide, as stamped up for use.

Figure 1j is a viewpshowing a pen slid into the receiver.

,i My invention consists, in general, in the adapting of the ordinary wooden pencil in use to the purposes of a pen, pencil, and eraser combined.

In figs. 1 and 1'" is shown the penbarrel i', serving also as a peu and pencil-point protectorgwith slot s out through,y in which the pen-slide holder n n works, admitting of the sliding in and outy of the pen without moving either pen-barrel or pencil. The pencil also may be used in the same manner, sliding without giving motion to the other parts. In order that the parts may slide freely, the pen-barrel is so formed as to allow of a space around the'body of the pencil suiicient and of proper shape to'admit of the freedom required. l

In iig. 1" is shown the material stamped out for the pen-slide holder, and att-ached to the pen for use, as shown `in igs. l, 1, 1, by bendingl the body of the cross, m, to the concave form of the pen, and bending back the sides, thus forming grooves into which the pen -is slid,while the arms n n, coming together, are entered through the slot s ofthe bent barrel, and turned over each side thereof, thus hugging the pen to the pen-barrel, andl allowing the pento slide buck-and forth as desired. Thus it may be seen, by sliding both pen and pencilv back far enough, the pen-barrel acts as pen and pencil-point protector.

- Having thus described my invention, what I claim, nnd-desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesis A pen andA pencil-point protector having barrel z" and slot s, in combination with the stamped plate, tig. l", constructed and operating substantially as specified, and all equivalents of the same.
