Letters Patent Nd. 78,601, dated June 2, 1868,
COMPOSITION TILE OR SLAB FOR FLOORS, die.
moohtttehule munt -tf1-iu time eittts atnzt inn mating een t the same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, ISAAC MARSH, Jr., of Milton, in the` county of Northumberland, and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a newA and useful Improvement in the Composition-Tile o1' Slab for Pavements, Floors, lite.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the seme, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichv- Figure l is a plan View of the upper side,
Figure 2 a plan view of the lower side,
Figure 3 p. transverse section, and
Figure 4: a longitudinal section of the said improved tile or slab, showing the composition as applied around one end only o f the same, for the purpose of displaying the peculiar Vconstruction of the interior, like letters of referenciiindicating the same parts when in the different figures.
The object of my improvement is to aii'ord within the slab or tile a permanent and reliable means of preventing thetendency to which a resinous composition-tile or slab has to bend or vary lits form in extremely hot Winther;l and my invention consists in the employment of a supporting ribbed platform or skeleton-frame within, closely surrounded' by and united with the exterior composition of the said tile or slab, substantially n s herein- Referring to the drawings, -is the ribbed platform or interior sk'elctomframe, and B the resinous composition which forms the exterior portion of` the slab or tile.
The platform or frame A. consistsof three or more series of st'ripspf stiff irood, combined together by nailing, so as to afford astiif and substantial support for the exterior resinous cnmpoundB, when the latter is moulded or cast around it. A i I.
In the present case the frame consists oils. series of horizontally-placed longitudinal pieces, a af, and it series of intervening longitudinalpieces, a ci, placed on their side edges, and a series of ilat battens) a 11'", fixed transversely tothe under sides of a a.y f l The resinous compostion may consist of a cement composed of coal-tar, either raw, or distilled into s. pitch7 and then mixed with fine gravel, sand, orhroken stone, or of pitch with any kind of dry clay or loamdust,1ime; and sand, or any dry solidifying materials that will produce a hard and. durable wearing-surface or covering for the platform. i'
, This composition being melted, the platform is to be thoroighly coated with it, and then suspended in a suitable mould, and the composition well-stirred and cast around it, so as to cover it with a thick body of the cement, substantially as represented in the drawings.
It will be seen that moisture annever get access to the platform, and therefore there will not be any liabilityto d eiangement from sucheause, after thc payement has been laid.v
I do not intend toreonne rmyself' to any particular size or form of the slab or tile, nor to the construction of the platform A, or to the use of the particular materials mentioned for.the resinous compound, as it is obvious these may be varied, without changing the character of the invention; but hovinp,r fully dcseribedrny improvement,
What`I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is confined to the following, viz: I claim a composition-tile or slab for pavements, floors, &c., consisting of the composition surrounding and supported or strengthened by an interior platform or framework, substantially as described.
