Gas Generator.

gleiten tatre figment ROBERT J. MALCOLM, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
Letters Patent A70. 78,600, dated Jzme 2, 1868.
IMPROVED APPARATUS POR GENERATING GAS.
TO ALL WHOMII MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ROBERT J, MALCOLM, of Gincinnathcounty of Hamilton, and StateV of Ohio, have invented newand-useful'Innprovemonts in Gas-Generators; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact deseription'ol the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this Specification, in which- 4Figure I is a sido elevation.
Figure II is a front elevation of the same.
Figure III is a' transverse sectionofthe revolving cylinder.
Similar letters of' reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to that class of gasgeneraters in which a. fluid is used for making the gas, and con sists of a'cylinder, revolving longitudinally on trunnions, and divided into three departments. The lluidbeing poured into the uppermost department, runs, bya pipe, into the lowestone, forcing the gas that accumulated intothe middle department, andthe-nce out, through a conducting-pipe, foruse. Y
It ulsohas weights or springs arranged for thepurpose of reversing the position ofthe cylinder"l Thereare also floats, for the. purpose of arresting the motion of the cylinder, and holding the same in a perpendicular position, and also for detaching the cylinder when all the v)fluid has escaped from the uppermost department,
To enable others skilled in the art Yto malte and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construm tion and operation.
A'A is a cylinder, divided into three departments, agg/,and e, by tho partitions mt. Said cylinder revolves on trunnions b Z1', in frame B B. 'G is a gear-wheel, which drives` pinion c on the trunnionb, and is driven bysprings or weights, to be wound vup in the ordinary way. cl cl are floats, with stems passing out through stuffing-boxes e e. c is a part of frame, so constructed that it will arrest the motion ofthe cylinder by the end of the loat coming in contact with it. ff are valves, for the introduction of the duid, and also tc take in fresh supplies of air.` g gnre vulves, which conduct the gas from departments x and e to the middle one. h It and iz' are four valves, through which' the ilujd passes from departments :tto 2, and, back when reversed. The state of the valvcs,.r|'hether closed or open, is easily seen in Fig. III, where open valves are represented by n, curved'line', lying 'to one side of the globe, and when closed the curved line lies over the aperture of the valve. It will'be borne in mind that all these valves act by gravitation. l
The operation of my invention is as follows: Fluid ofany suitable nature, such as petroline, dto., is poured into department a, through aperture and valves f, until this department is almost full. The uid then runs through the valves t t, into 4and filling department z, 'forcing the gas that has there accumulated up through vulve g, and out through pipe g', from whence it is conducted, by'pipes, throughout the house, in thc usual way. While the fluid `has been running out of the upper department, an equal volume of air was' admitted by valvef, and as soon as the duid has all or nearly all escaped from department'x, the' float, having followed, detachee it from piece C, and the spring, through pinion c', revolves the cylinder until the cross-piece O intercepts its motion by comi'nfar in contact with float Li. The fluid is now all in department eand uppermost, and the operationcontinues as before.
I do not claim broadly the-revolving,` cylinder; as I am well aware that that is not new; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Carburetting air by reversing. the vessels or chambers x and z, substantially as described.
2. The combination of vessels or chambers :t and z, so that as the compound vessel is revolved or reversed, air is drawn in and forced out alternately as described.
3. The valves ff', g g', 7e it', it", in combination with Vtheir respective pipes, when used as set forth,
4. The loats r2 d', andv cross-bar C', or itsvequivalent, as specified.
5. The combination of the cylinder A, frameA B, and lloats d d', when operating as and for the purpose specified. R. J. MALCOLM.
