Description

No. 785,512. PATENTED MAR.21,1905.
' T. MILLIGAN.
BRIDLE BIT.
APPLICATION FILED Mu 11.1904.
INVENTOI? 1201721 filliyafl/ Patented March 21, 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS MILLIGAN, OF FORTUNA, CALIFORNIA.
BRlDLE-BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 785,512, dated March 21, 1905.
Application filed May 11, 1904. Serial No. 207,389.
To all 11/71/0711 it flea/7. concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs MILLIGAN, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of Fortuna, in the county of Humboldt and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Bridle-Bit, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in bridle-bits for horses, an object being to provide a novel form of bit particularly adapted for controlling fractious horses with compara tively little effort on the part of the driver.
1 will describe a bridle-bit embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 shows a bit embodying my invention as applied to a horse, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bit.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a bit having guard-plates 2 on its ends, these plates being provided with slots 3 to receive the chin-strap A and slots 5 for receiving the ordinary driving-reins 6, these ordinary drivingreins 6 being rearward of and practically in line with the bit 1, so that undue pressure will not be forced upon the horses nose. Above the bit 1 and formed integral with the guardplates is a metal nose-band 7, designed to engage over the nose of a horse, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1. Above the nose-piece the guard-plates are provided with rings 8 for receiving safety-reins 9, and the guard-plates I am aware that leather nose-pieces have been used in connection with bits; but they do not bear with suflicient pressure on the tender part of a horses nose, and therefore are objectionable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A bit, guard-plates on the end of the bit and integral therewith, a rigid metal nose-piece above the bit and integral with said guardplates, and ring members integral with the guardsplates above their connections with the nose-piece, the relation between the bit and nose-piece being such that when the device is drawn upon to force the nose-piece against an animals nose, the bit will serve as a fulcrum by engaging the roof of the animals mouth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS MILLIGAN. Witnesses:
