To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN B. HILL, a citizen of the United States of America, and a residentof Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Stamps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hand-stamps, and especially that character of stamps which are provided with a series of movable type-bands.

The main object of this invention is to provide a stamp of this character in which there are two independent sets of type-bands arranged so that they print in two parallel lines, one above the other, and in the preferred embodiment of my invention one set of these bands is adjustably arranged in connection with the other, whereby the stamp may be readily adjusted, so as to enable the operator to print or stamp tags even though the lines on one set of tags may be differently spaced from those on other sets.

My invention therefore consists of the stamp as shown in its preferable embodiment in the accompanying drawings and will be hereinafter more clearly described and then definitely claimed at the end hereof.

In the said accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hand-stamp made in accordance with the preferable embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is asimilar view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my new form of type base or bridge. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the supplemental frame and type-base detached.

Referring now to the details of the draw-' ings by numerals, 1 designates the main frame of an ordinary hand-stamp, in which are supported a series of type-bands 2 of the usual order, these bands being rotatable by means of drums 3 and thumb-wheels at over the type base or bridge 5 at the base of the stamp.

The stamp so far described is one which is in very common use, except that the type base or bridge 5 is preferably made with a groove or channel 6, which permits each end of the type-base to fit over the parallel arms of the main frame 1. This makes an exceptionally-strong construction and absolutely prevents any spreading of the parallel side arms.

To the side arms of the main frame 1 I secure the supplemental frame 8, which also comprises two side .arms, each having an extension 9 extending over the parallel side arms of the main frame'l, as clearly seen in Fig. 1. In the preferable embodiment of my invention these extensions 9 are slotted, as shown at 10, 11, and 12, and pins 13 and 14C, projecting from the main frame 1, enter the slots 10 and 11, and thus permit the supplemental frame 8 to be moved with relation to the main frame 1 as far as the slots 10 and 11 and the pins 13 and 14 will permit. In order to hold the supplemental frame in its properlyadjusted position, any desirable means may be used, although I prefer to use the pin 16, which passes through both frames and through the slots 12, one end of this pin. 16 having a head 18 and the other a set-screw 19, by which the extensions 9 of the supplemental frame may be secured in their adjusted position on the parallel side arms of the main frame 1. The supplemental frame may be made in a variety of ways, although I prefer the simple form shown in Fig. 4, where it will be seen that the supplemental frame 8 is formed of one piece of metal bent into the form of two parallel side arms having'the aforesaid extensions 9, the side arms being connected by a web 20. The supplemental frame also supports a series of type-drums 22, with thumb-wheels 23 adjustable on a spindle 24, and the bands 26, which pass around the drums 22, also pass under a type base or bridge 28 at the lower end of the supplemental frame 8. In order to provide a perfectimpression, this type-base is formed at an angle to the side arms of the supplemental frame 8 in order that it may been the exact plane with the type-base 5 in the main frame.

I desire to call attention to the fact that one set of the numbering-bands is somewhat larger than the other and has a complete alphabet on each band, and hence it is possible to compose any word having no more letters in it than there are bands in the set, and on the other set of bands I have numbers instead of letters in order that one set of bands may print a word and the other set print figures. It will also be observed that the last two bands of.those containing numbers have the numbers on a much smaller scale in order that they may indicate cents. The object of this construction is that it is very often desirable to print tags, and the set with letters may be arranged to print such a word as, for example, Price, while the other set of bands may be used to print the amount, such as $543.67. Inasmuch as it very often happens that the tags of one establishment are ruled with the lines spaced differently, the adjustable feature of my stamp will be found of great utility, as it will be possible to adjust one set of bands with relation to the other in order that the two lines of printing may be spaced the same as the lines on the tag.

As the use of my improved stamp is evident from the drawings, no description of the operation is necessary; but I desire it distinctly understood that various changes may be made in my stamp without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.

What I claim as new is 1. In a hand-stamp, a main frame having printing characters supported thereby,in combination with a supplemental frame carried by said main frame, said supplemental frame having a type-base and a series of type-bands and type-drums coacting therewith; the typebands of the supplemental frame being arranged so as to print parallel to the line printed by the characters supported by the main frame, substantially as described.

2. In a hand-stamp, a main frame, typedrums and a type-base supported by said main frame, type-bands passing around said drums and base, in combination with a supplemental frame adjustably secured to said main frame, drums and a type-base supported by said supplemental frame and type-bands supported by said drums and type-base, substantially as described.

3. In a hand-stamp, a main frame, typedrums and a type-base supported by said main frame, type-bands passing around said drums and base; in combination with a supplemental frame having extensions coacting with the main frame and by which it is secured thereto, said supplemental frame carrying drums, a type-base and type-bands; one of said frames having slots and the other frame pins to permit the adjustment of said supplemental frame, substantially as described.

L. In a hand-stamp, a main frame supporting printing characters, in combination with a supplemental frame also carrying printing characters, said supplemental frame having extensions coacting with the main frame, one of said frames having slots and the other frame pins to permit the adjustment of said supplemental frame, and a pin passing through both of said frames having a set-screw for locking the supplemental frame in position, substantially as described.

5. In a hand-stamp, a main frame supporting type-bands, and a supplemental frame carried by said main frame and also carrying type-bands; one set of said bands having numbers thereon and the other figures, substantially as described.

6. In a hand-stamp, a main frame carrying type-bands, a supplemental frame adjustably carried by said main frame, and type-bands carried by said supplemental frames, the typebands on one of said frames having letters thereon and the other figures, substantially as described.
