PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. PHILLIPS, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
CONTROLLER-BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 785,327, dated March 21, 1905.
' Application filed August 9, 1904. Serial No. 220,140. i
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a certain new and novel Improvement in Controller-Bits, of which the following is a specification.
The aim of my invention is to provide a bit adapted to double up in the animals month if a very hard strain isplaced upon the same, this controller-bit being especially adapted to be used with horses that tongue-haul, sidepull, or lug on the mouth, the bit operating,
-however, without in any way laoerating the cheeks, though the horse is unable to catch the bit in his teeth.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown, in Figure 1, a top view of a bit embodying my invention, while Fig. 2 shows a side view, partly in section, thereof.
In carrying out the aim of my invention I use two cheek-plates, (marked B and B in Fig. 1,) each cheek-plate being provided with a strap-loop 7 and 7 as shown in Fig. 1, from which loops 7 and 7 extend the head-strap 8, as is shown in Fig. 2. Each cheek-plate is slotted, as is shown at 9 in Fig. 2, while each cheekplate is further provided with a pin p, as. shown in Fig. 2, and from the pin of each. -cheekplate extends a joint-bit member, as
is shown at A and A, which are joined to the bit members I) and D, to which are secured swivel-loops C and C, each loop being pro vided with a terminal rein-loop, as shown at 4 and 4 in Fig. 1. Each cheek-plate is provided with a loop, as is shown at 6 and- 6, and from the loop 6 extends the chin-strap 1, secured to the intermediate bar 5 of the swivel-loop C, as is shown in Fig. 1, while extending from the loop 6 of the cheek-plate B is the chin-strap 1, adj ustably secured to the bar 5 of the swivel-loop C, as is also shown in Fig. 2. From the swivel- loops 4 and 4 extend the reins 2, secured by means of the loops 0, as shown in Fig. 2, while the chinstraps 1 and 1 are adjusted by means of the buckles 3, these chin-straps being provided with the usual loops 0. From this it will be noticed that I provide two cheeklates B and B. From the outer end of eac pivotally extends a joint-bit member, as is shown at A and A, which are jointed each to a second joint-bit member, as is shown at D and D, these joint-bit members crossing one another, so that each joint-bit is secured to the forward point of one cheek-plate and passes through the rear slot of a cheek-plate opposite, as is shown in Fig. 1. It will further be noticed that the traveling end of each joint- 1. In a bit of the character described, the
combination with two slotted cheek-plates, of a bit member extending from and pivotally secured to each cheek-plate, a second bit member extending from each first-mentioned bit member to form two'jointed bits, each rearbit member extending through the slot within each cheek-plate, upon the side opposite, said jointed bits crossing one another X-sha ed, a swivel-loop secured to the end of eac bit member projecting through the cheek-plates, and a pliable loop extending from each swivel-loop and secured to the opposite cheek-plate.
2. In a bit of the character described, the combination with two jointed bits, of two slotted cheek-plates, each ointed bit extending from and being secured at one end to one of the said slotted cheek-plates, each jointed bit projecting at the opposite end through the slot within the cheek-plate opposite, so'
that said jointed bits are held X shaped, a In testimony whereof I affix my signature swivel-loop secured to each bit and projectin presence of two Witnesses. ing through each cheek-plate a chin-strap extending from each swivel-lodp and secured CHARLES PHILLIPS 5 to the cheek-plate opposite so that said chin- Witnesses:
straps cross one another, all arranged as set CHARLES S. ELGUTTER, forth; I FREDERICK J. LARSON.
