The hopper I has a slot across its lowest-point. i The edge on the side the hooks descend slopes downward, land at-tho back ofthe edge on the other ,side'is a flange, as seen in iig. 5. Two ways,` K and K', extend,vthe first one, K,.i`rorn the sloping edge of the slot, and the other, K', from the'other edge, each way being a continuation of said edges., The fr ont way, K', is a little higher than the other. The hook claspsK-, and slides down on it, while'the other scrvesito keep it on the way,`as is` seen in iig; 5. The flange on the edge of the slot describedserves-to prevent hooks from falling' out. if they do not catch on the way K. Just opposite the-points where the re'cess in the head ofthe punch is when the punch is at rest, the way K is cut-away a suiiicient space toV allow` the passage of the hook to the recess in the punch. Directly back of the hook, when in 4this position,
is an arm, L, which is pressed forward towards the punch by the pin F3, andis drawn back by the spring L.
The hopper has an agitator in its lower end, over the said slo't. It consists of a conical roller, with India'rubber,
hair, Aorthe lilrc, in strips projecting from its surface-,by which to turn' over such of the hooks as do not fall right in the waysfat first. This agitator is made to turn slowly by m-eansof the connectngrod I2, arm-ratchet and vpawl, I3, while onthe backend are another ratchet and springscatch,I to prevent it from turning-backwards.
The operation of the machi'ne will be readily understood from thedescription given. Hooks are thrown into the hopper, some of which, atleast, will find their way 'on to the ways, while the others will be unable to get out by reason -of their forni and theiiange at the edge, and will be thrown'fupl by the `agitator until they also fall-right. The agitation of the machine and their own gravity will cause'them to descend to the lower end. If now the work to.be operated on is held on the top of theslide H, and the` camwheel pressed slightly backwards, the arm L, forced forward by the pin F3, will force the hook from the, way3 th1ogl1 the'opening in the outer one, and into'the recess-inthe head of the punch D. It` now the operator willl press down the treadle, the punch will'comc down with such force .as to carry the point-s of the hooksthrough the leather, into the notches in H,- and between the rollerv andthe end of' G. By continuing the'pressurc on the treadlc, the pin F3, engaging with the pin G",will draw Gr back a short distance, theetl'ect of which is top bend th'e points of the hooks around the' end of H while in the notches therein. When this has beeneompleted,l theslide G has got so far that the 'tapering notch G2 has operated on the spring H2, and thrown itl o-ut of the notch' in H, when'both slides are drawn backtogether (H by means of the pin G5) suic'iently `Ato allow the punch'D to reach the base, when the segond'cam forces it down, and the hook is firmly clinched inthe work. 0n raising the foot from` thetrcadle, the cam will be drawn back by al spring or'weight, which will forcethc slides G'and H and the arm Ll forward, inserting another ,liook in thev head offthe'pun'ch to'be operated.`
Of course, the machine will `operate without Ythe hopper or ways, as the punch may'be fed by hand; and thereis a variety o f ways in which the various movements may bc given to the punch and slides.
I do not, therefore, wish to coniinc myself t'o the particular mode hereinfdes'cribed, for my'invcntion consists nUt'only in the arrangement of parts, but in feeding' automatically the hooks, and driving them through the leather, bending the points, and clinching them firmly. by a single simple motion'.

When thesprin'g 0'* has. passed the cani, the spring O presses the strapbac'k into-its place. A stop, 05,"or`r` the under side of the arm B2, will keep the strap in place While the hook is being 'pressed in. But I do not claim this form in this application.
