BOBBlN-RETAINING MEANS FOR ROTATABLE SPINDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,957, dated March I4, 1905.

Be it known that I, ANDREW D. MORSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopedale, county of WVorcester, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Bobbin-Retaining Means for Rotatable Spindles, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates particularly to that type of bobbin-retaining means for rotatable spindles wherein centrifugally-acting clutching or retaining members are arranged to engage a yarn-receiver 0r bobbin when applied to the spindle and effect rotation thereof in unison with the spindle.
Ordinarily the clutching members are maintained in expanded or operative position when the spindle is running bare owing to centrifugal action, and the bobbin is pushed down over said members when it is put on the spindle, taking an appreciable time and force enough to temporarily contract the clutching members until they enter the chamber in the base or head of the bobbin.
In my present invention I have provided means to act automatically upon and retract the clutching members when the spindle is running bare, the application of the bobbin to the spindle by simply dropping it into place thereon acting through such means to release the clutching members, and thereby permit them to expand into driving engagement with the bobbin. \Vhen the bobbin is dofl'ed, said means act automatically to retract the clutching members.
The various novel features of my invention will be fully described in the subjoined specification and particularly pointed out in the following claims.
Figure 1 is a part front elevation and vertical section of a portion of a rotatable spindle provided with bobbin-retaining means embodying one form of my invention, the spindle being supposed to be running bare. Fig. 2 is a similar view, but showing a bobbin in place to illustrate the means for releasing the clutching members suificiently to cooperate with and drive the bobbin. Fig. 3 is an inner side perspective view of one of the clutching members detached; and Fig. I is a transverse section on the line 4 at, Fig. 1, looking downward.
The rotatable spindle A, its whirl IV, having an upturned neck w tightly secured to the spindle to rotate therewith and having an annularly-enlarged head w to constitute a bobbin rest, may be of well known construction, and herein I have shown the head as provided with an annular groove or seat I in its top, forming a motion-limiting raceway.
A fiat retaining-ring 2 is secured to the head and partly overhangs the seat, as shown, the head w being provided inside the seat with a tubular extension 3, which surrounds the spindle for some distance above the head, (see Figs. 1 and 2,) the upper end of the extension being cored out at at to form a seat for the lower end of a light spring 5, coiled around the spindle.
In the present embodiment of my invention a second motion-limiting raceway is mounted upon the spindle and movable relatively thereto, said raceway being shown as a collar 6, mounted to slide vertically on the spindle and resting on the upper end of the spring 5, a ring 7, secured to the spindle above the collar, limiting its upward movement.
The lower end of the collar 6 is shaped to present a circular upturned flange 8, having its upper face flared to constitute an annular cam 9, fora purpose to be described.
A plurality of centrifugally-acting bobbinclutching members are arranged symmetrically around the spindle, one of such members beingshown separately in Fig. 3 and comprising an elongated transversely concavoconvex body 10, having an outturned foot 11 and inturned and bent downward at its opposite or upper end at 12. (See Figs. 1, 2. and 3.
The feet 11 of the several members are loosely inserted in the seat 1, and the [lat retaining-ring 2 is then secured, permitting the clutching members to rock radially on their feet within the seat 1, but preventing them from lifting out of position.
Radial pins 13, driven into the head across the seat 1, serve to separate the clutching members laterally and to efliect their bodily rotation with the spindle.
The inturned or overhanging upper ends 12 of said clutching members enter loosely the space between the flange 8 and the body of the collar 6, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the cam 9 cooperating with the ends 1 It will be seen from an inspection of the drawings that when the spring 5 lifts the collar 6, as in Fig. 1, the cam will act upon the inturned ends 12 to draw in or retract the upper ends of the clutching members toward the sgindle, and if the latteris rotating the spring acts as described against the centrifugal action, which tends to expand or force outward the clutching members.
\Vhen a bobbin B, Fig. 2, is applied to a running spindle, the clutching members will therefore be retracted and will not offer any resistance, so that the bobbin can be dropped into place. As soon, however, as the top of the bobbin-chamber 7' hits the rounded top 14: of the collar 6 the latter will be pushed downward, compressing the spring 5, (see Fig. 2,) and as the cam 9 is lowered the upper ends 12 of the clutching members will be released sufliciently to permit them to expand instantly under centrifugal action and engage the walls of the chamber 7) to thereby rotate the bobbin with the spindle.
The downward movement of the upper motion-limiting raceway is limited by the top of theextension 3, so that the upper ends of the clutching members cannot be wholly disengaged from the limiting or controlling action of the cam 9.
When the bobbin is dofl'ed, the spring expands and raises the collar 6, thereby automatically retracting the clutching members while the spindle is running bare.
My invention is not restricted to the precise construction and arrangement herein shown and described, for so far as 1am aware it is broadly new in a centrifugally-acting bobbin-clutching device to provide means to retract the clutchingmembers when the spindle is running bare, the application of the bobbin acting through said means to release the clutching members and permit them to expand and cooperate with the bobbin. Accordingly various changes or modifications may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a rotatable spindle, of centrifugally-acting bobbin-clutching members carried thereby, to engage and effect l rotation of a bobbin with the spindle, and means to retract said members when the spindle is running bare, the application of a bobbin to the spindle acting through said means to release automatically the clutching members and permit them to cooperate with the bobbin.
2. The combination, with a rotatable spindle, of centrifugall'y-acting bobbin-clutching members carried thereby, to engage and effect rotation of a bobbin withthespindle, and spring-controlled means to cooperate with and normally retract said members, the application of a bobbin to the spindle acting through said means to release automatically the clutching members and permit them to cooperate with the bobbin.

The combination with a rotatable spindle having motion-limiting raceways, one of which is movable with relation to the spindle, and a spring to move said raceway in one direction, of centrifugally-acting bobbin-clutching members having their upper and lower ends loosely held by said raceways, and means to retract the clutching members by or through spring-induced movement of the movable raceway, the application of a bobbin to the spindle moving it oppositely and permitting the clutching members to expand.
5. The combination with a rotatable spindle having motion-limiting raceways, one of which is vertically movable on the spindle and provided with an annular cam, and a spring to raise said raceway, of upright, centrifugally-acting bobbin-clutching members having their upper and lower ends loosely held in the raceways, the spring-induced movement of the movable raceway acting through the cam to press inward the adjacent ends of the clutching members, the application of a bobbin depressing the movable raceway and thereby causing the cam to release the clutching members and permit them to expand.
(5. The combination with a rotatable spindle having a fixedly-attached seat, a verticallymovable collar on the spindle above it and provided with a cam, and a spring to lift the collar, of upright, centrifugally-acting clutching members supported loosely at their lower ends in the seat, the upper ends of said members being bent over and inward to cooperate with the cam, spring-induced movement of the collar causing the cam to act upon the upper ends 3. The combination, with a rotatable spinof and draw in the clutching members, the application of a bobbin to the spindle depressing the collar and its cam, to thereby permit .outward clutching movement of the said members.
7. The combination, with a rotatable spindle, of centrifugally-acting bobbin-clutching members carried thereby, to engage andefi'ect rotation of a bobbin with the spindle, means to cooperate with the upper ends of and govern the outward movement of said clutching members, and a spring acting upon said means to render said members inoperative, the application of a bobbin to the spindle acting upon said means in opposition to the spring, to permit outward clutching movement of the clutching members.
8. The combination with a rotatable spindle having motion-limiting raceWays, one of which is vertically movable on the spindle and provided with an annular cam, and a spring to raise said raceway, of upright, centrifugally-acting bobbin-clutching members having their upper and lower ends loosely held in the raceways, the spring-induced movement of the movable raceway acting through the cam to press inward the adjacent ends of the clutching members, the application of a bobbin depressing the movable raceway and thereby causing the cam to release the clutching members and permit them to expand, and stops fixedly secured to the spindle to limit the vertical movement of the movable raceway.
