PATENT OEEIcE.
CHARLES E. OOONS, OF FORT WVORTH, TEXAS.
BALANCllNG ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,924, dated March 14, 1905.
Application filed January 13, 1905. Serial No. 240,877.
To all whom, it TIMI/y concern:
Beitknown that I, CHARLES E. OooNs, acitizen of the United States, residing at Fort Worth, Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Balancing Attachments for Pumps, Windmills, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to balancing devices for pumps and windmills and for similar uses; and the object is to provide balancing attachments for engaging the sucker-rod or pumprod to make the pumping or work more easily accomplished and to protect the pumping or operating mechanism from the jerking or dropping motion so-common and destructive to pumping mechanism, The use of such balancing attachments will prolong the life of pumping mechanism.
Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description, and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application and specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the balancing attachments mounted on'a pump pipe or tube, the tube and the sucker-rod being broken. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the sucker-rod clamps and the connecting-links on a larger scale than shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a portion of one of the fulcrum clamps or supports, illustrating an elongated opening for an attaching-bolt. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the tube or pipe and the fulcrums with their supports engaging the tube.
Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
The drawings show a sucker-rod F broken away at each end and engaged by clamps G, the clamps G being secured thereon by suitable bolts g. Pairs of link-connection bars A and B are pivotally connected to the clamps G by pivot-bolts a and Z). Levers H are pivotally connected to the link-bars A and B by pivot-bolts (Z. Fulcru ms are provided for the levers H. The arms C and D are mounted on the Well pipe or tube'E by means of the fulcrum-arm clamps L. The lower ends of the arms O and l) are bent and formed into clamps L, adapted to engage the pipe E, and are secured thereon by the bolts R. The fulcrum posts or arms O and D are bifurcated at P, their upper ends, to receive the levers H. Suitable fulcrum-bolts M are provided to hold the levers H in place in the arms O and D. Movable weights J are mounted on the levers H and may be secured at various adjustments thereon bysuitable set-screws K. The weights J may be of any suitable form. I have shown them round with apertures therethrough to receive the levers H. The bolt-holes S in the fulcrum-clamps are elongated for the purpose of changing the positions of the fulcrums relative to each other to effect a perfect balancing of the power and for increasing or diminishing the power. The elongated bolt-holes are necessary to permit moving the upper ends of the fulcrum-arms closer to or farther from the sucker-rod when the bolts M are to engage the different holes in the levers. The bent portions of the clamps L are sufliciently elliptical to permit changing of the positions of the clamps. 'ith the various provisions for adjustment shown my improved balancing attachment is adapted for use on any ordinary windmill fixture or pump.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A balancing device for windmills and the like comprising sucker-rod clamps, fulcrums terminating in clamps for engaging the well tubing or pipe, levers mounted in said fulcrums, link-bars pivotally connected to said sucker-rod clamps and pivotally connected to said levers, and movable weights mounted on said levers, said fulcrum-clamps being bent to engage the tubing, and bolts being provided for securing said fulcrum-clamps together, said clamps having elongated boltholes and said levers and fulcrums having each a plurality of bolt-holes to permit adjustment of said fulcrums to effect a balancing of said levers to increase or diminish the power of said balancing devices.
2. In a balancing device for windmills and the like, the combination of a sucker-rod conn eetion, clamps engaging said sucker-rod connection, linlvbars pivotally engaging said clamps, 't'ulcrums terminating in. clamps ad apted to engage the Well tubing 01' pipe, levers adjustably pivoted in said 'fulcrums and pivotally connected to said link-bars, the clamps formed by the terminals of sai(.lfulcrum-arms having elongated bolt-holes to permit the changing of the positions of said fulcrums,
IO bolts for retaining said clamps in different positions, and movable Weights mounted on the long arms of said levers.
In testimony whereof I set my hand, in the presence of two Witnesses, this 7th day of J anuary, 1905.
