PATENT OFFICE.
PULP-SEATING ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,822, dated March 14, 190
Application filed January 9, 1905. Serial No. 240,146.
To all when it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WHITE, asubject of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Edinburgh, Scotland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pulp-Beating Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pulp-beating engines or Hollanders of the kind referred to in United States Patent No. 757,585, of April 19, 1904:, wherein the knifeplate is trained or adjusted to the beating-roll; and the present improvement has for its object to simplify the constructionand operation of the movable knife-plate and plate-box and adapt the latter to be applied to existing heaters without involving structural alterations thereof, while it may also be applied to heaters of modern designs.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of part of the trough of a pulp-beating engine or Hollander, showingin crosssection the knife-plate box and relative parts and indicating part of the knife-roll. Fig. 2 is a section at right angles to Fig. 1 of the knife-plate box. Fig. 3 is a sectional View corresponding to Fig. 1, but showinga modified construction.
As shown by Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the plate-box A is made externally to fit into the usual opening or den B in the trough C, and internally it assumes the form of a rectangular fluid-pressure chamber A, in which is fitted a rectangular piston or ram D, carrying within it a series of blades or knives D, protruding above its upper surface and forming the usual knife-plate. The piston or ram D is acted on by fluid under pressure admitted to the chamber A through an inlet a and regulated so as to raise the knife-plate into mpre or less close contact with the knives of the beating-roll E. Suitable packing F, held by an accurately-fitted gland'G, prevents escape of fluid from the chamber A past the sides of the ram D. The pressure may be regulated by employing a head of water, which may be vathis arrangement the knife is practically floated and caused by the fluid-pressure to follow any slight movement or oscillation of the beater-roll.
In the modification represented at Fig. 3, the water instead of being admitted directly into the pressure-chamber A is delivered into a flexible bag H, which is thereby expanded to press on the piston or ram D, the waterpressure to such extent acting indirectly to operate the said ram.
The movement of the knife-plate in each case may be limited by suitable stops, such as the pins I on the plate-box A entering into slots J in the ram D.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In apulp-beating engine the combination of a plate-box adapted to fit externally the usual opening in the beater-trough and forming internally a fluid-pressure chamber, a movable ram or piston closely fitted into said chamber, carrying knives to constitute a knifeplate and adjustably supported by fluid-pressure in said chamber.
2. In a pulp-beating engine the combination with the beater-trough and its roll of a platebox comprising a fluid-pressure vessel, a ram or piston fitted therein and a knife-plate supported in contact with the beater-roll by said ram 0r piston.
3. In a pulp-beating engine, the combi nation with the beater-trough and its roll, ot'aplate box comprising a ram casing or chamber, a ram or piston fitted therein and a knife-plate supported in contact with the beater-roll by said ram or piston, and a flexible water-pressure bag interposed in said casing between the bottom thereof and the ram or piston.
4. In apulp-beating engine, the combination with the beater-trough and its roll, of a platebox adapted to fit the opening in the beatertrough and forming internally a fluid-pressure In testimony whereof I have signed my name chamber, a movable mm or piston closely fitto this speclhcatlon 1n the presence of two subtlng said chamber and carrying knives to scrlbing Witnesses.
constitute a knife-plate, means for raising JOHN \VHITE. 5 the ram by the action of fluid under pi'eslvltnessesz sure and stops for limiting the movement of WALLACE FAIRWEATHER,
said ram. JNo. ARMSTRONG, J unr.
