FEEDING ATTACHMENT FOR BOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I,Moinus BECKER, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Chicago, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Feeding Attachments for Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a boiler, and more particularly to an attachment for feeding.
Heretofore it has been necessary, in feeding I water to a boiler, to employ an ejector or some. means to feed this water under pressure to the boiler. struction, however, I provide means whereby the boiler itself supplies the requisite pressure for forcing the feed-water into the boiler under pressure. I am thus enabled to do away with the use of an injector or any pump for forcing the water under pressure into the boiler. These and other objects of my invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a boiler embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken upon line 33 of Fig. 2.
As illustrated, my boiler comprises an outer cylindrical shell 4 within which is located a cylindrical tube 5 extending the entire length of the shell 1. The bottom plate 6 is securely riveted to the shell 4 while the boiler-head 7 is secured to the top of the shell. Located at a distance below the boiler-head 7 there is a second boiler-head 8. This second boiler-head divides the boiler into a main compartment 9 and an auxiliary or feed-water compartment 10. Located inside the tube 5 there is a superheater 11. This superheater comprises an elongated tube through which the steam passes downward through the passage 12, and then upward through the passage 13 and thence to the outlet pipe 14:. This superheater is connected with the upper or main compartment 9 by means of the pipe 15. Likewise connected to the upper portion of this main compartment 9 there is a second pipe 16 which passes through the boiler-head 7, and thus communicates with the upper portion of the feed-water compartment 10. Suitable pressure gages 19 and 20 are as sociated with the two compartments in the usual manner, in order to indicate the respective pressures maintained in these compartments. A safety valve 21 is likewise connected with the compartment 9.
Heat-is supplied to the boiler by means of the gas burner 22, which is located below the boiler, the boiler being supported upon legs 23 to provide space for this burner.
Suitable valves 2% and 25 are provided in the feed pipes 16 and 17, respectively, so as to regulate the feed to he boiler.
In the operation of my boiler, the valve 26 in the feed pipe 27 is opened to permit water to pass into the upper feed-water compartment 10, and then passes from this compartment through the feed pipe 17 and valve 18 into the main compartment 9. As heat is applied to the boiler, the pressure within the compartment 9 increases, and in order to feed the boiler at this time it is necessary that the water he forced into the same under pressure. By my invention I provide this pressure by means of the by-pass feed-pipe 16. The steam passing through this pipe, the amount of which can be regulated by means of the valve 24-, enters the top of the compartment 10. This steam entering this compartment exerts a pressure upon the surface of the water, which produces sutlicient pressure to force the water from this compartment through the pipe 17 into the main compartment 9. But a small quantity of steam genera ted in the compartment 9 passes through the by-pass 16, the greater portion passing through the pipe 15 to the superheater 11 to the main outlet pipe 1-1.
In operation, I find it advisable to first close the valve 25 in the pipe 17 and the valve 21. I then open the valve 26 in the feed-pipe 27 which is connected to the city main. When the feed-water compartment has become filled, I close the valve 26 to prevent the water from backing up into the city main. I then open the valves 24 and 25. The steam passing through the pipe 16 exerts a pressure on the surface of the water in the compartment 10, which thus forces the water under pressure through the pipe 19 to the lower compartment 9 of the boiler. In practice the valve 25 is opened just sufficiently to feed the requisite amount of water to the boiler. That is, the amount of water fed to the boiler equals the amount turned into steam. As the pressure in the boiler increases, the pressure of the steam passing through the pipe 16 increases so that the pressure of the feed water automatically increases With the increase of pressure in the boiler. I
It is thus seen that I have devised a Very efficient and simple mechanism for a boiler feed, and one in which it is unnecessary to employa special injector or other pump for forcing the water under pressure into the boiler.
While I have illustrated one particular type of my invention, it will be understood that I do not wish to limit myself to such exact construction.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is:
In a boiler, a cylindrical shell, a boilerhead at the top of said shell, and a second boiler-head located at a distance below said first boiler-head to thereby divide said boiler into two compartments, a steam pipe communicating with the upper portion of the lower compartment and extending to and communicating with the extreme upper portion of the upper of said compartments, and
