SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 784,791; dated March 14, 1905.

Be itknown that I, WILLIAM (J. House, a citizen of theUnited States,residing at Vienna, in the county of Lavaca and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grubbers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to grubbers, and has for its object to produce a machine of this class that will be simple and at the same time effective.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a grubber embodying my invention, one of the wheels thereof being removed. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
1 represents an axle of approved construction mounted upon the wheels 2, said wheels being suitably secured to said axle.
3 is a suitable drafting-tongue secured in any manner to the axle.
4 represents frames having a central opening, through which the axle 1 is adapted to pass, whereby the frames are revolubly mounted upon said axle. These frames are provided with radially-extending arms 5 and 6.
7 is a grubbing tool or point secured between the arms 6 by means of the bolts 8, said point or tool being of any approved construction.
9 is a counterbalancing or weighted lever, the upper end of which is secured, by means of the bolt 10, between the arms 5, said lever 9 being held against movement independent of the grubbing-tool by means of a tie-rod 11, one end of which is secured to the lever 9, while the other end is secured to the grubbing-tool 7, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, from which it will'be seen that the parts move in unison- As will be seen from Fig. 1, the grubbingtool extends below the plane of the wheels in order that it may penetrate the ground. In the ordinary operation of the grubber the grubbing point or tool 7 is drawn through the soil and will cut or sever the average root or other obstruction; but should it encounter a root or obstruction too large for it to sever the continued movement of the team will cause the grubbing-tool to move backward and upward in the direction of the arrow, thereby raising the counterbalancing or weighted lever 9, and thus permit the grubbing-tool to ride over or pass the obstruction without retarding the progress of the team. As soon as the grubbing-tool has passed the obstruction the counterbalancing or Weighted lever 9 will immediately assume its normal position, thereby forcing the grubbing-tool in an opposite position, as shown in Fig. 1. It of course is obvious that this may be applied to machines having any motive power.
I/Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a grubbing-machine, the combination with the axle and the wheels thereon, of a frame journaled on the axle and having arms extending above and below the same, a grubbingpoint secured to the end of the lower arm, and means secured to the upper arm for holding the grubbing-point normally in engagement With the ground and permitting said point to move out of engagement with the ground when it meets an obstruction.
2. In a grubbing-machine, the combination with the axle and the wheels thereon, of a frame journaled on the axle and having arms extending above and below the same, a grubbingpoint secured to the end of the lower arm,
and a weighted lever secured at its upper end to the upper arm and entending downwardly and rearwardly from the arm, the free end being adapted to travel on the ground.
3. In a grubbing-machine, the combination of a grubbing-tool revolubly mounted, and a weighted lever secured at its upper end to the tool and at its lower end adapted to travel on the ground in the rear of the tool.
I. In a grubbing-machine, the combination with a wheeled axle, of frames revolubly mounted thereon, arms extending radially from said frames, a grubbing-tool secured between a pair of said arms, a weighted lever secured between another pair of said frames and depending therefrom, and a tie-rod connecting said lever with said grubbing-tool.
