PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR HAAG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,674, dated March 14, 1905 Application filed May 16, 1904. Serial No. 208,261.
To (all Lu/tom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ARTHUR HAAG, a citizen of the United States. residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York-have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and usethe same.
This invention relates to a combination-tool adapted for the use of carpenters, cabinetmakers, &c. .7
The object is to provide a device combining a plumb and level, saw, and square, the latter being adjustable for general use, and to thus furnish a tool which is simple of construction, convenient of transportation and use, and of value for making joints and doing other like work.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combination-tool embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the blade.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the stock or body of. the tool, having a slot or receiving-space 2 opening through one side and end thereof and provided at the opposite side and end with openings 3 and a, in which are respectively arranged spirit-levels 5 and 6, the former serving as an ordinary plumb-level and the latter as a gage for determining the planes or levels of surfaces. A blade 7 is arranged to fold into the slot or receiving-space 2 and is provided at one end with an opening 8 for the passage of a pivot bolt 9, on which it swings. This bolt9 passes through the walls or jaws 10 at the open end of the slot 2and is providedwith a thumb-nut 11. Confined on the projecting end of said bolt by this nut is a combined plumb bob or gage and bladelocking device 12, consisting of a tilting body 12, having an opening 13 for passage of the bolt and centrally depressed to receive said nut and provided at opposite sides with ado W11:- wardly-projecting locking arm or detent 14: and a finger-lug 15. The lug 15 is engaged by a spring 16, interposed between the same and the stock 1, which spring serves to normally tilt the body 12 to project the arm or detent 1 1 down through an opening 17, formed in one of the jaws 10, thus adapting said arm to snap into either one of a series of openings 18 19 2O 21, formed in the blade concentric with the opening 8 when the blade is moved to bring the same into register therewith. One of the edges of the blade that denoted by 22is straight to serve as a scribing or gaging edge, while the other edge is inclined to the plane of the blade and is formed with saw-teeth 23.
When the blade 7 is swung to a position in line with the major axis of the stock 1, the opening 18 will register with the opening 17 and the arm or detent 14 will be projected thereinto and lock the blade from movement, allowing the device to be employed as a saw for cutting a joint, the stock 1 being used as a handle, as will be readily understood. \Vhen the blade is arranged at a right angle to the stock, the opening 20 will be engaged by the lock 14, and the edge 22 of the blade will aline with the adjacent end of the stock, thus adapting the device to be used as a try-square. Similarly the blade may be locked at different angles by means of the openings 19 and 21, adapting the tool to be used as a miter-square in two positions at reverse angles. \Vheu it 'is desired to release the blade from any one of these positions to fold or swing it to a dif ferent position, the lug 1:3 is pressed inward against the resistance of spring 16, thereby retracting the locking arm or detent let. lVhen the lug 15 is released again, the arm 1a will be projected by the spring 16, as will be readily understood. \Vhcn the blade is folded, by screwing up the nut the arm 1% will be held in frictional contact with the blade, thus securing it from outward movement. By the arrangement shown the part 12 forms a gage to coact with the level 5, and thus serves the function of the usual bob. p
A tool constructed in this manner is simple, convenient, and effective and of value to carpenters, cabinetmakers, and others doing joinery work by the same tool, as the angles may first be laid oif and stock then cut.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A combination-tool of the character described comprising a stock carrying a plumblevel, a pivoted saw-blade having a working edge to serve as a square, a pivot-hole, a series of openings concentric with said hole, and a locking device comprising a bolt, said locking device having a body mounted to tilt upon the bolt and having a locking-arm to engage in one of said openings in the blade and a tinger-lug, a spring acting on said lug to project the arm and a nut on the bolt to retain the locking device thereon, substantially as described.
2. A combination-tool of the character described, comprising a stock slotted on side and on one end, and carrying a plumb-level and a pivot pin or bolt, a saw-blade mounted in the slot and provided With a Working edge to serve as a square and having a hole for the passage of said pin or bolt and a series of openings concentric therewith, and a combined plumb, gage and blade locking device, the same comprising a body mounted to tilt upon the bolt and having a locking-arm to engage in one of said openings and a finger-lug, a spring acting on said lug to project the arm, and a nut on the bolt to retain the locking device thereon, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
