SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,67 1, dated March 14, 1905.

Be it known that I, FRANK FULLILovE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owenton, in the county of Owen and State of Kentucky,
have invented a new and useful Fishing-Reel,-
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fishing-reels, and has forits principal object to construct a simple, compact, and thoroughly effective reel in which all of the parts are so arranged as to avoid the necessity of adjustment or frequent repair.
A further object of the invention is to provide a securing means for the operating-crank for the purpose of preventing the crank from wearing loose, and, further, to arrange the crank-arbor in such manner as to afford greatest strength where strength and durability are necessary.
A still further object of the invention is to improve and strengthen the construction of the click-spring mounting, so that in case of necessity a broken or worn spring may be replaced without the exercise of any mechanical skill.
A still further object of the invention is to improve and simplify the construction of the drag and drag-adjusting devices.
WVith these and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size, and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a fishing-reel constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the outer face of the flanged disk that supports most of the working parts. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of a portion of the winding-spool. Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of the main win ding-gear detached. Fig. 6 illustrates in perspective the two sides of the dragadjusting devices detached. Fig. 7 is a similar view of the drag and the main crank-arbor. Fig. 8 illustrates the construction of the clickspring and its support. Fig. 9 is a detail sectional view corresponding to a portion of Fig. 1 and illustrating a slight modification. Fig. 10 is a detail sectional view of a portion of the device on the line 10 10 of Fig. 2. Fig. 11 is a detail sectional view of the click-springsupporting stud.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
The principal parts of the frame or cage comprise an end disk 1 and a ring 2, that are secured together by cross-bars 3, and to these bars is secured a rod-attaching disk 1. The plate 1 is recessed to receive one end of a spool 5, and the spool-arbor enters a bearing-open ingformed in the center of the plate, while the inner diameter of the ring 2 is such as to permit the ready insertion or removal of the spool when necessary. hen the parts are in position, the end flange of the spool seated within the ring 2 is guarded in such manner as to prevent accidental catching of the line.
Secured to the ring 2 in any suitable manner is a flanged disk 7, the securing means being in the form of a ring 8 embracing the ring 2 and provided with a threaded flange 9 for engaging the externally-thrcaded flange of the disk 7, or suitable seeuringscrews may be employed for the purpose, if desired.
To the inner face of the flange 7 is secured a bridge 10, that preferably is held in place by screws 12, and to the central portion of the bridge is riveted one end of a stationary arbor 13, that tapers, the smallest diameter being at the outer end of the abor. Over this arbor fits a hollow arbor or spindle 14, to which is rigidly secured a gear 15, and the arbor is guided and supported within a recessed boss 17, that projects from the outer face of the disk 7. At the outer end of the arbor or spindle 14 are two portions 19 and 20 of reduced diameter, the portion 19 being provided with a right-hand screw-thread for the reception of a counterweighted crank 21, and the portion 20 of the arbor is provided with left-hand threads to receive a cap-nut 22, so that turning of the crank will merely serve to tighten the nut and the crank can under no circumstances wear loose.
The arbor of the spool is provided with a pinion 24, which meshes with a gear 15, and the teeth of both the pinion and gear are preferably inclined so as to prevent backlash. ith the pinion engages a click-spring 25. One end of the click-spring is bent into approximately circular form, as indicated at 26, and is seated within an annular recess formed in a stud 27, one wall of the stud being slotted to permit the entrance of the spring. The stud is provided with a threaded opening 28, into one end of which extends a screw 29, serving to confine the spring within the annular recess of the stud. The base of the stud has an approximately rectangular shank 30, which extends through a radial slot 31, which will permit adjustment of the stud toward and from the axis of the pinion. In order to firmly hold the stud in position, a small leaf-spring 32 is provided with a rectangular opening for the passage of the rectangular shank of the stud, and the latter then passes through the slot 31 and is held in position by a screw 32 entering that end of the threaded opening 28 opposite to the screw 29, and between the screw 32 and the outer wall of the flanged disk is a washer 33, preferably of slightly elastic nature and so arranged as to fully cover the slot 31, and thus prevent the entrance of moisture to the interior of the flanged disk.
To one end of the bridge is secured a drag or brake 37, having an inwardly-projecting arm 38, that carries a small head or stud 40 for engagement with the outer face of the adjacent end of the flange of the spool, and the inner surface of the end portion of the arm is slightly beveled in order that it may be engaged by an inclined head. 42, carried by a thumb-piece 4:3. The thumb-piece is provided with a segmental flange 14, to which the head 12 is attached, and the head 12 extends through an opening in this flange, so that its rear face may bear against the inner surface of the flanged disk, and thus prevent lateral strain on the thumb-piece. The outer or thumb-engaging surface 47 of the thumbpieee follows the contour of the periphery of the flange, and this portion and the flange 44 are connected by a contracted neck 48, which may be placed in position by introducing it through a slot 19 in the flange of the disk 7,
so that when in place no auxiliary devices will be necessary to hold it in position.
With a reel constructed in the manner described all of the parts will be firmly and securely held, and it will be impossible for the crank to wear loose under any conditions of use, while the click-spring is so supported as to permit of extended use without strain, and, further, the supports of the spring are of such character as to permit ready removal should the spring become worn or broken after long use.
In order to add to the strength of the reel, the crank-handle arbor 51 is made tapering in form, as shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- 1. The combination in a fishing-reel, of a frame, a spool, a crank, gearing connections between the crank and spool, a click-spring for engaging one of said gears, a click-springholding stud having a threaded opening and provided with an annular recess for receiving a correspondingly-shaped end of the clickspring, and a screw engaged in said threaded opening of the stud and serving to retain the end of the click-spring in said recess.
2. The combination in a fishing-reel, of a frame having a slot, a spool, a crank, gearing connections between the crank and spool, a stud having an annular recess and provided with a non-circular portion entering the slot, a spring having an opening for the passage of such non-circular portion ofthe stud, a screw for locking the stud in adjusted position, a click-spring having one end curved to conform to that of the annular recess of said stud, and a screw for confining the click-spring in position.
3. The combination in a fishing-reel, of a frame having a guiding-slot, a flanged spool, a crank, gearing connections between the crank and spool, a drag having a projecting head or stud for engaging the flange of the spool, said drag being-formed of an inherently elastic arm tending to move away from the flange, a thumb-piece having a milled portion outside the frame, an arcuate flange inside the frame, a contracted neck between the outer and inner portions of the thumb-piece, said neck passing through the guiding-slot in the frame, and a headed stud carried by the flange, one end of the head being adapted to engage the frame and the other serving to engage the drag, substantially as specified.
1. The combination in a fishing-reel, of a frame including a recessed disk and a ring, cross-bars uniting the two, a spool, a flanged disk forming a detachable portion of the frame and provided with peripheral threads, an internally-threaded ring embracing the framering and engaging the threads of the flange, a crank supported by said flanged disk, and gearing connections between the crank and the spool.
