NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.

which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that class of shipping and storing vessels known as "non-relillable bottles, the essential object of which is to prevent an empty bottle which contained the goods of a certain brand or manufacture from being refilled with an inferior goods or the goods of another and different brand or manufacture.
In its particular form the present invention has reference to that type of non-refillable bottles which employs a separate neck which is designed to engage a neck extension of the bottle-body and wherein the joint between said neck and extension is inclosed by a band or sleeve which is threaded to engage corresponding' portions of said neck and extension, said neck extension having a separate and removable valve-seat of conical form adapted to receive a ball-valve.
The present invention consists of the parts and the constructions, arrangements, and combinations of parts which I will hereinafter fully describe and claim.
In the accompanying drawing the figure represents a vertical sectional view of a nonrelillable bottle embodying' my invention.
In carrying out my invention I may give to the body A of the bottle any desired and wellknown shape, provided that said body is formed with a short neck extension A', which is externally threaded, as at a, and has an annular flange or shoulder a' at the. base or lower end of the threaded portion. Interior to this neck extension A' is placed a separate valveseat B, which is shown in the form of a truncated cone, having at the top an annular outturned iange c", beneath which and surrounding the cone is a cork, rubber, or other yieldpacking between the said extension and the contents of the bottle. By employing the yielding jacket B' the valve-seat may be adjusted higher or lower in the neck extension A' to regulate the amount of movement which may be allowed the bottle-valve. This valve is, as shown, in the form of a sphere or marble C, and its diameter is such relative to the inner diameter of the conical valve-seat that it will closely fit said seat and most effectually prevent the ingress of liquid to the bottlebody. The conical valve-seat may be made of glass and being made separate from the bottle simplifies and cheapens the construction of the bottle by dispensing with the usual integral thickened and groundjoint portion which is customarily formed as a seat for the valve.
Forming an aXial prolongation of the neck extension A of the bottle is a separate neck D, which contains a cork or stopper E and has its lower portion externally threaded at CZ, these threads being practical continuations of the threads on the neck extension A', the lower portion of the neck D being preferably made thicker' than the adjacent end of the neck extension A', on top of which latter it seats, and said lower end of the neck D being formed with a beveled portion Z 2, which forms an annular track or raceway 'for a controllerball c', which rests upon the ball-valve and serves as a weight to assist the proper seating thereof. The controller-ball may be and preferably is of smaller diameter than the valveball, and the distance between the top of the controller-ball and the said track or raceway when the bottle is upright and the parts have assumed the position shown in the drawing is only such as to allow the ball-valve when the bottle is inclined or laid or held horizontal to sufficiently move relative to its seat to allow the contents of the bottle to How out, while any attempt to refill the bottle when in the aforesaid positions will result in the ball-valve closing snugly against its seat by the combined action of 'the controller and the inflowing iuid. The track LZ2 serves to prevent the controller-ball entering the bottom of the separate neck when the bottle is inclined, and said controller-ball has a 'free rolling movement on said seat as the bottle is axially turned.
Inside of the bottle-neck D are formed the inwardly-extending lugs D to form a tortuous passage for the liquid and to prevent the successful passage of' a wire or implement to hold the valve oli" its seat and the consequent refilling of the bottle. The lugs D' lie just above the lower edge of the neck D, and when the bottle is completely inverted to allow the ball-valve to move completely out ofl its seat the controller-ball enters the open bottom of the neck D and contacts with said lugs; but as soon as the bottle is turned into an inclined position both balls recede toward the valveseat and the controller-ball again comes at rest beneath the lower edge of' the bottle and against the trackway (Z2.
The exterior band or sleeve G not only serves to join the two parts A' and D of' the neck,to both of which it may be and preferably is cemented,butit will also be useful as a holder 'for a' label or other advertising means. (Not shown.)
The device described is extremely simple and compact and is cheaply made, while the limited movement which is allowed the ballvalve and the close confinement and yet f'ree rolling movement of' the controller-valve insures a prompt and effective seating' of the valve when any attempt is made to refill the empty bottle, as the balls are entirely exposed and the fluid in its flow inward reseats the valve` with the controller-ball following and holding the valve in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A non-refillable bottle having in combination a bottle-body with an integral neck extension, aconical valve-seat separate from the bottle-body and having a surrounding yielding jacket or annulus whereby a tight joint is formed and the valve-seat is adjustably held in said neck extension, a ball-valve adapted to engage said seat, a controller-ball adapted to rest upon said ball-valve, a separate neck seated on top of the said neck extension of the body and having internal means forming a tortuous passage f'or the fluid, and means rigidly uniting said neck portions, said separate neck having its lower end serving as a trackway for the controller-ball.
2. A non-refillable bottle having in combination a bottle-body with a neck extension, a conical valve-seat separate from said body and having a surrounding jacket of compressible material closely fitting the said neck extension, a ball-valve to engage said seat, a controller-ball adapted to rest upon the valve, a separate neck seating on top of the neck extension and having an annular inclined trackway on its bottom edge and having oppositelyprojecting lugs forming a tortuous passage, said trackway normally close to the controllerball to allow but slight movement to the latter when the bottle is inclined to the perpendicular, and said lugs forming a stop for the controller-ball when the bottle is substantially inverted, and a band surrounding separate neck and neck extension of' the body and rigidly united to both and covering the joint therebetween.
3. A non-relillable bottle having in combination a body and two alined neck portions one separate from the other and having its lower edge provided with an annular track, said separate neck having, also, a tortuous passage and a cork or stopper, a separate valveseat of conical f'orm in the lower neck portion, a ball-valve and aweight-ball thereon and contained in said lower neck portion close to said track and contact with which is made when the bottle is inclined out of' a perpendicular, and a band surrounding the neck portions and covering the joint therebetween said band and neck portions having threaded engaging portions.
